Staff report A steering committee formed by the Greater Phoenix Economic Council has taken its first step toward addressing quality-of-life issues in the Valley. The committee, which met Tuesday for the first time, consists of business, civic, government, educational and environmental leaders. Its goal is to gather a diverse range of community and business groups to work together on concerns identified by the more than 700 people attending the GPEC's "Economic Summit in February. Although most of the summit participants believed the overall quality of life in the Valley had improved during the past three years, 55 percent of those surveyed indicated that problems with air quality, crime, transportation and education would grow in the next decade. Committee members are: Mark DcMichcle, president of Arizona Public Service Co.

Richard Bowers, Scottsdale city manager. Drew M. Brown, president of DMB Associates. Philip J. Dion, chief executive officer of Del Webb Corp.

Ed Eisele, president of Holsum Bakery. Dr. Paul Eisner, chancellor of Maricopa Community College. Frank A. Fairbanks, Phoenix city manager.

Cataract surgery has advanced dramatically in recentyears. One of these advances is the ability to control the outcome in a way to reduce the need for glasses.

What Cataract Surgery at The Barnet Dulaney Eye Center can mean to you. Patients who have worn glasses most of their lives have often found they are no longer as dependent on glasses after Refractive Cataract Surgery. There is no extra charge for Refractive Cataract Surgery's added vision correction. There is seldom any need for eye and normal activities can often resume within hours. The doctors at The Barnet Dulaney Eye Center changed the standard of cataract treatment in Arizona by introducing self-sealing cataract surgery as a routine procedure.

This made possible quick healing, no-stitch cataract surgery. For 20 years, more people have trusted their cataract surgery to the doctors of The Barnet Dulaney Eye Center than anywhere else in Arizona. "If it didn't seal the deal, it certainly moved it along quickly," he said. NBC News publicist Beth Corn-stock, who returned a phone call placed to Lack on Tuesday, confirmed the anecdote and said Applegate is expected to begin work in early June. Applegate said she and Channel 3's news managers have not set a departure date but she likely will remain through the important May sweeps ratings period, which concludes May 22. Applegate came to Channel 3 from KTVN-TV in Reno in March 1993, but her star didn't fully begin its ascent until the Aug.

29, 1994, debut of Good Morning Arizona. A fast-paced three hours of news, weather, traffic and coffee talk, Good Morning Arizona quickly clobbered ABC's Good Morning America, CDS This Morning and a competing all-local show launched by Channel 10 (KSAZ). It then began to challenge Today for the local ratings lead. Good Morning Arizona has won its time slot for three straight sweeps periods. "When she walked into Andy Lack's office, she walked in as a person beating his brains out in Phoenix," said Phil Alvidrez, Channel 3's vice president of news.

Applegate, a native of Wheeling, W.Va., was a self-described "geek" and "TV addict" as a kid. "I used to get up early, when my parents would go to work, (to watch Today)" she said. "I remember watching Jane Pauley and Tom Brokaw, and thinking, 'I could do that. Or could Applegate said her husband, Rob Nikoleski, a sports anchor at Channel 5 (KPHO) has been offered a job at MSNBC. Nikoleski said he had "kind of a job interview" with Lack last Wednesday at the Phoenician resort, a meeting also attended by Applegate.

"He asked a lot of job interview-type questions," he said. "I think he wanted to make sure I wasn't psychotic."
