A Force 8 is picking up. The North Atlantic is battleship gray and unforgiving. Standing on the bridge of the QE2 with Capt. Ronald Warwick, the ship's master, is reassuring. We are 35 miles off the wreck of the Titanic.

"I like it when it's flat calm. When it's a pond," he says. I am inclined to agree. He looks out at the employment section in the Wednesday RepublicGazette Classifieds. Reno $134 Rochester Mn.

Cocktail parties are the places to collect the ship's gossip, and invitations to those in the captain's cabin and the wardroom are highly prized.

It is 1 a.m. Two cocktail parties, a five-qourse dinner, a bottle of a show and $50 poorer for an hour in the casino and the night still seems young. I head for the Yacht Club. AH those respectable middle-aged, middle-brow Americans whom I had seen sipping coffee by day or quietly reading Great Drownings at Sea in the ship's library are in party mode. Back in my cabin at around 2 a.m., there is no sign of my 13-year-old son, who is making the crossing from New York to Southampton with me.

Next morning my son announces that he has teamed up with other youngsters, been for a midnight swim, hung around the ship's 2000 Club, played shuffleboard, deck quoits and generally -video-gamed the night away. The next day I visited the nursery, which is vast, well-equipped and staffed with two trained nurses. "People don't think of this ship as being for kids," Colin Parker, the cruise director, says. "They think of it as a once-in-a-lifetime experience, the elegant way of crossing the Atlantic. But we are always looking to devise new programs for the youngsters on board." As usual, given the heavy seas, I opt to meet my son not on deck but in Queen's Grill bar.

Where you eat defines you in the ship's elaborate class structure, and the Queen's Grill is definitely top of the pile. Ordering is a tricky business as the menu is extensive. You can eat very well if you choose well. Some passengers do not bother with the menu and just eat caviar and steak at nearly every meal. Food tends to be bland because the passengers like it that way but it is good-quality, and the cooking has consistency.

Sunday is gloriously sunny, the first calm day and the feast of the Holy Trinity. I attend the interdenominational service led by the captain. It all seems very Anglican and very English, especially our prayers for the queen and a low-key rendering of Whiting's For Those in Peril on the Sea. Psalm 107 sets the seal dh the trip: "They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters; These see the works of the Lord and his wonders in the deep." The ship ran aground last year which was the last, publicity it needed with the fiasco over its 1994 refit still fresh in the memory.

Exploding toilets keep a strong hold on the imagination. Last year, too, a freak 95-foot wave hit the ship. The first officer, a relaxed Scot, says philosophically: "There's nothing you can do. Keep your fingers crossed. Pray." It must have worked.

The crew has had a lot of adventures since the QE2's launch in 1967, not least the ship's duties as a troopship during the Falkland Islands conflict of 14 years ago. 'But what ambitions does a man like Capt. Warwick have left? At sea since the age of 17, he has forgotten more countries than most people will ever visit, he has a beautiful Hawaiian wife and a saintly outward calm. But he still dreams. "I want to be on the bridge on New Year's Eve 1999.

1 want to do a full world cruise as captain and take the ship into the next century." wAnd retirement? What about a canal boat, in Llangollen (the mid-Wales town where he was born), perhaps? The not-so-ancient mariner pulls at his beard. "I'm not against that," he says. "It might be quite pleasant, although I don't know what my wife would say." The conversation makes one why, in the late 20th century, people still want to take nearly five days crossing the Atlantic by ship rather than by jet. The question is partly answered later that afternoon by Col. Norman Dodd, and his wife, Eileen, who are on their 51st transatlantic crossing.

Col. Dodd says, "There's nothing like it in the world. It's a proper liner, not a cruise ship. The staff are quite outstanding. The food is splen Professional Travel Service Las Vegas packages include free 24 hear cconsmy rental car from Alamo.
