Actually, they're both on the cover of this month's Esquire.

The magazine has profiles of each by two Pulitzer Prize-winning writers, and the resulting stories are as different as the candidates themselves. I started to advise skipping Taylor Branch's "Clinton Without Apologies" altogether, but it's so hilariously partisan, fawning and downright laughably bad, it's worth it for the yucks alone. Branch goes on at length about his relationship with Clinton, which was renewed after a 20-year hiatus 1 after Clinton was elected in 1992. The idea, from what I gather, is to give us an up-close-and-personal look at how the president conducts business, but what we really get are vignettes like this: "I have seen him carry on an intense phone discussion with the secretary of state while chewing an unlit cigar, finishing a crossword puzzle, and moving on without a beat to deal solitaire." So, the guy sounds like he'd be fun at a party. Does that make him a good president? Branch makes some interesting points, but we've listened to enough personal meanderings by the time he gets there including the presentation of a Jefferson Memorial bird feeder by his father, who made it, to the president that it's hard to care.

Richard Ben Cramer's "The Heart of the Bobster," on the other hand, while a little muddled, takes off like a ricocheting bullet from the get-go: "It's summertime, and the Bob-ster's still snappin' his jaws, trying to sink his teeth into the Big Issue.
