Ms. Trilling, who died Wednesday at age 91, wrote of literary figures, high-society murder and marriage to her professor-writer husband. Her last book, A Visit to Camelot, finished earlier this year, was about an evening at the White House when Kennedy was president. Ms. Trilling wrote five books and three collections of essays and reviews.

Her work appeared in magazines across the country, including the New Yorker, the Atlantic, the Saturday Review, Commentary and Partisan Review. The former Diana Rubin met Lionel Trilling in 1927 in a Manhattan speakeasy, and they began dating. She later remarked: "Surely going to bed with a man before marriage was the most courageous act of my life." The couple married in 1929. Her husband, a Columbia University professor and literary critic, got her a job as a book reviewer at the Nation magazine. In 1993," her eyesight failing, Ms.

Trilling wrote her memoir, The Beginning of the Journey: The Marriage of Diana and Lionel Trilling. In it, she wrote about her intellectual circle, which included Irving Howe, Sidney Hook, Hannah Harold W. Robinson, 81, of Sun City, a retired inventory control worker for Caligher died Oct. 24, 1996. He was bom in Coshocton, Ohio, and was a civil service employee at Fort Douglas during World War II.

He was also a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1934 to 1939. Survivors include his wife, Betty Dial; daughters, Sheila Thomas and Kathy Lindsay; sons, Wesley, Howard and David; sisters, Mildred Aultman, Ada Pfost; brother, William; and four grandchildren. Ms. Trilling edited a 12-volume'" edition of her husband's work after'' his death in 1975. Her two collections of criticism1'' were: Reviewing the Forties and We'1 Must March My Darlings. She had edited two volumes on D.H. Lawrence.

In 1981, at 76, she wrote Harris: The Death of the Scarsdalet Diet Doctor, an account of the trial of Jean Harris in the murder of Dr." Herman Tarnower. A id Dr. Hughes James Davis, iJ invented Dalkon Shield BALTIMORE Dr. Hughes'; James Davis, who developed Dalkon 'Shield birth-control device0 that was hailed as a breakthrough but later was blamed for 18 died Wednesday of pancreatic can- cer. He was 69.

Dr. Davis died at his home on Gibson Island in the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. Dr. Davis, who held more than patents for medical instruments, was( a professor of gynecology and obstetrics at Johns Hopkins University in 1968 when he developed the intrauterine device as an tive to the birth-control pill and its then troublesome side effects. The Dalkon Shield was pulled' from the U.S.

market in 1974 after was blamed for thousands of painful (' infections, spontaneous abortions, hysterectomies and at least 18' deaths among its 3 million users. A $2.3 billion trust fund was created in 1989 after A.H. Robins Co. of Richmond, the maker of the shield, filed for bankruptcy protection because 200,000 had filed lawsuits. Dr.

Davis had sold the manufacturing rights to the device to A.H. Robins in 1970, and production of the shield was halted in 1975. Hunter Rouse, pioneer in field of hydraulics IOWA CITY, Iowa Rouse, a former University of Iowa -professor and an internationally known pioneer in the field of hydraulics, died Oct. 16 in Sun Ariz. He was 90.

Prof. Rouse served as University of Iowa Carver professor of civil and environmental engineering emeritus and was former director of the Iowa Institute of Hydraulic" Research and dean emeritus of the' College of Engineering. An author of seven books, eluding Engineering Prof. Rouse published more than 130 technical papers and became1' known as one of the world's leading authorities on the history of hydrau-' lies. i McIIenry Tichenor, built media empire LA FERIA, Texas McIIenry Tichenor, a Spanish radio pioneer' i who founded what became the.

country's largest Hispanic radio' group, died Thursday at 98. A former newspaper reporter, Mr.1'; Tichenor started building his own media empire in 1929 when purchased a small interest in Shawnee News in Oklahoma. r'i Over the next eight years, he bought interests in three more.l newspapers, including the Valkyr, Morning Star in llarlingen, before entering the business in 1949 with the purchase of llarlingen radio station KGBS. "Jack" Wean, 72, of Phoenix, a chief of recreation services for the federal government, died Oct. 25, 1000. He was born in Harrison Township, and was a World War II Navy veteran.
