It was a young German soldier who saved him.

By STEPHEN PAYNE In the night sky over Germany in January, 1944, a Lancaster bomber burst into flames after being raked by the cannon of a fighter. The English navigator, Arthur Lee, was the only one of the crew of seven who was able to bale out of the aircraft as it dived earthward. The dead crewmen included two Australians: the 21-year-old pilot, Noel Belford, from Taree, and 32-year-old Rob Gould, the rear gunner, from Northampton, near Geraldton in Western Australia. At 6.30am on July 17, 16 Corsairs led by Parker flew off from a position 130 miles from Tokyo for a "Ramrod" (armed reconnaissance) against airfields at Matsushima, Sendai and Masuda on the east coast of Japan. Visibility was poor, with a cloud base down 500 feet, and Parker was surprised to see a lighthouse "appear out of the murk at very close quarters. Its keepers were visible on the gallery'. The keepers were armed and hit one of Parker's wingmen.

Parker's Ramrod attacked Matsushima, "skipping" 500-pound bombs into workshops, hangars and barracks from rooftop height, and strafing aircraft on the ground. They went on to do the same at Sendai and Masuda, also strafing several trains. The flak was very Summary of Death Notices ADENEY, E. ADGEMIS, S. APPLEYARD, A.
