Jones and Bob Boze Bell will do mornings for the Valley's newest country contender. Jones and Bell will sneak on Thursday. The station is still rolling out the start-up, so the new morning team won't raise the curtain on its act until the countdown concludes. The battle lines are drawn in the competition for morning country listeners. Recently, Ben and Brian replaced market leaders Tim and Willy ion Camel Country 108 (107.9 Early signs are that Camel's newteam is maintaining the morning momentum.

Soon Harmon and Wilson for KNIX and Jones and Bell. for Young Buck Country will try to outdraw the Camel crew. This could be intense, folks. KEZ (99.9 FM) morning funsters Beth and Bill were off Friday and will vacation Monday as well. Filling in is Marty Manning and Maggie Brock.

Brock was part of the powerful Power 92 (92.3 FM) morning show with Bruce Kelly un-til the pair parted company a few months ago. Is KEZ the new radio home for Maggie Brock? Brock is a strong talent that should be heard. -KTAR (620 AM) and K-LITE (90' FM) will have a new sister soofwThe duo's parent company, Pulitzer Broadcasting, was the successful bidder in the bankruptcy auction of KVVA (860 AM). KVVA 1 074 FM) went to Z-Spanish which will retain thejjpanish-language format. The deal was worth more than $13 mil-lioiuSPulitzer paid almost $5 million foi'the AM, which it expects to operate" in about four months.

KTARK-LITE General Manager Mare McCoy says the new station, which will be housed in Pulitzer's new'showplace facility, will air a format compatible with KTAR. Expect a variation of the" iHMTI mm newsfalksports format that McCoy calls "information radio" and new call letters. Other bidders for the stations included Bill Miller, chief operating officer of MAC America, which owns Channel 3 (KTVK) as well as KEZ and Oasis (103.5 FM). In an interesting agreement, KTAR's Tom Dillon steps up for the second time as radio play-by-play man for the Arizona Cardinals this season. Dillon, who has been the voice of ASU sports since 1978 and was play-by-play announcer when the Cards were on KTAR, will be heard this season on K-HITS (96.9 FM) and KIDR (740 AM).

The logistics of broadcasting both college and pro football are complicated. Dillon says, "It leads to some interesting weekend travel, but it's exciting for me to be back in the NFL." Dillon will work seven days a week for about 1 7 weeks to cover his broadcast obligations and will continue his morning sports reports on KTAR. Recent ratings show the talk-radio battle is as fierce as the country competition. KTAR, which was down this rating in total audience, leads KFYI (910 AM) by only 11 0th of a share in total audience. But running the calculator on the hour by hour shares shows that KFYI seemed to benefit more from its syndicated programming than from local talk shows.

At noon, Rush Limbaugh jumps four shares from his lead in. Starting at 6 p.m., Dr. Laura increased her audience every hour, as did Ken Hamblin through his evening show. Art Bell, heard overnight, is the highest rated show on the station. At KTAR, Preston Westmoreland may be the station's most underutilized talent.

While he beats KFYI in total audience, KTAR's afternoon format doesn't let Westmoreland display his skills as an interviewer. KTAR's lowest ratings are between 1 and 3 p.m. when McMahan About Town seems lost in the traffic against Limbaugh. When the Republicans meet in San Diego next week, KTAR will feature Grant Woods in that time period, broadcasting from the convention floor. A breakout of the ratings also shows the growth of Howard Stern, simulcast on the Edge (106.3 and 100,3 FM).

Stern ranked No. 1 with listeners age 18-34. Frankly, I can't figure out what Stern sidekick Robin Quivers adds to the show. To me, she seems about as important as Ed McMahon was to Johnny Carson. The new sitcom jabs the sports worT3 with refreshing wit after so much syrupy Olympic coverage, and it slugs with in- mmm sightful satire. Professional sports deserves the pounding. The surprise is that so many ON TV 10 tonight, HBO 2 the agent's dealings reflect desperation, greed, luck and a pronounced lack of principles.

In the premiere, several crises plague Michaels. He has to cough up $150,000 for a banquet in his honor. He covers $35,000 in gambling debts run up by his associate Kirby Carlisle (Jim Turner). And Michaels gives $110,000 to the aforementioned Cowboys defensive back, who lives far beyond his means. Tonight's show uses the running sight gag of Michaels registering the problems in his checkbook.

Michaels will stoop low, way low, to bail himself out of the mess. He also narrates the action in a benevolent, reasonable tone totally at odds with the crazy way the events unfold and the unscrupulous way he reacts.
