Page 6 The Sydney Morning Herald, Tuesday, September 3, 1985 combine harvester, aker cuts back staff PUBLIC NOTICE CONTAMINATED GERMAN AND AUSTRIAN WINES The following lists of wine have been tested by the New South Wales Department of Health for contamination by the chemical additive, diethylene glycol. The addition of this chemical to wine is prohibited in New South Wales under the Pure Food Act. Consumption of significant quantities of this chemical causes kidney damage or may even be fatal. The New South Wales Department of Health is continuing to test wine for contamination with this chemical. Further lists of wine tested will appear in public notices as results become available.

Wine which appears below as contaminated should not be consumed under any circumstances. German or Austrian wines which have not yet been tested should also not be consumed under any circumstances. Wine degree," the spokesman said. "But, given the circumstances, it's unavoidable. "But it should not be a huge disaster for Horwood Bagshaw since the harvesters available on the market now were imported before the tariff change, and so don't get the advantage of it." China has agreed to buy 800,000 tonnes of Australian wheat in a deal which the Austral ian Wheat Board says reaffirms the long-standing relationship between the Chinese and the board.

The chairman of the board. Sir Leslie -Price, said both the board and the Chinese had been confident the relationship would continue, even though the Chinese had not renewed any of their long-term agreements with wheat exporters. Sir Leslie said the board was also pleased at the timing of the sale as it provided an early start to its selling program for the new crop year. The bulk of the latest sale is for shipment early in 1986. As a result, the board now expects to ship about 1.3 million tonnes to China during 1985.

Company Wine Vintage Vintage Company CANBERRA: Australia's biggest manufacturer of combine harvesters, Hor-wood Bagshaw Ltd of Mannum, South Australia, yesterday stood down 53 casual employees and warned its 250 remaining employees they could be stood down by the end of the week. The company secretary, Mr Ralph Mitchard, said all production had been interrupted until a definite assurance was received from the Federal Government about the level and form of new bounty arrangements. The Treasurer, Mr Keating, announced in the August Budget that tariffs on imported combine harvesters would be removed and an equivalent bounty to local manufacturers would be introduced from January 1, 1986, after an Industrial Acceptance Corporation hearing to determine the level of bounty. Mr Mitchard said the Minister for Industry, Technology and Commerce, Senator Button, had backdated the effective date of the tariff removal to August 21 in response to pressure from importers. As a result importers could quote firm reduced prices for their goods while Horwood Bagshaw was unable to amend its pricing policy until at least November when the amount and form of bounty might be known.

The company's principal financiers would not provide further finance until it received a definite assurance the new bounty would not be less than the average level of duty saved on imported machines. "With more than S40 million of sales at stake by the end of the financial year and with the Mannum plant up until now working two to three shifts per day, we hope that the Government will provide the assurances necessary to resolve the crisis created by the Government's own actions," Mr Mitchard said. A spokesman for Senator Button said Horwood Bagshaw and other local manufacturers could expect the new bounty would be "roughly equal" to the former 15 per cent tariff. But the Government could not say exactly what the bounty would be until the IAC had completed its inquiry in November. "We acknowledge the problem to some The following wines have been tested for contamination with diethylene glycol and have been found TO BE CONTAMINATED.

The monorail, designed by the Swiss company Von Roll, would run along a single elevated rail supported by steel beams. The trains use rubber wheels and carry passengers above street level at an average speed of 33 kmh. The system has the capacity to carry more than 4,000 people an hour and would provide a fast link, not only to Darling Harbour but to other facilities such as the markets, Entertainment Centre, Powerhouse Museum and Chinatown. TNT plans to charge $1 for the full trip and no government funds would be needed to support the system.

According to the executive director of TNT, Mr Roland Hoy, a recent market research study conducted by McNair Anderson showed that two out of every three people interviewed preferred the monorail to tram-based transport systems. "The monorail would be self-funding and will not be a burden to the taxpayer. Sydney is a vibrant, exciting city and it should have an exciting modern form of transport," he said yesterday. By PAOLA TOTARO, Transport Reporter Blueprints of a futuristic monorail proposed for the State Government's Darling Harbour project were unveiled to the media yesterday. Designed to operate over a 3.6-kilometre loop from Darling Harbour, via Bathurst, Pitt and Market Streets, the monorail is TNT Ltd's "people-mover" submission to the NSW Government.

Four other Australian companies have submitted detailed transport system proposals for Darling Harbour, including a light rail or tram system. JOHN SLEE VICOMTE BERNARD DE ROMANET SEKTELLERIE SCHLOSSBOCKELHEIM GM BH By AMANDA BUCKLEY CANBERRA: The Opposition spokesman on education, Senator Peter Baume, came out yesterday in support of the establishment of private universities and colleges in Australia. Senator Baume, who said it would "overcome some of the rigidities of the current made these comments while speaking on the recommendations of the recent Commonwealth trade and education mission to South East Asia. The mission reported that there was a high demand for Australian tertiary education services in Malaysia, Indonesia and a number of other South East Asian countries which, if properly exploited, could earn Australia an extra SI 00 million a year by 1988.

Entrepreneurs around Australia have expressed interest in setting up universities which are owned and funded privately, and cater for fee-paying South East Asian students and Australian students on scholarships. Plans for such a university, to be funded by the Japanese Tokyu Corporation, are well advanced in Western Australia. Senator Baume said the Opposition strongly supported the uninhibited sale of Australia's education services to our neighbours. "These services could be provided both in Australia and in the students'-home country, either by current higher educational institutions or by private institutions," he said. "The Opposition supports the setting up of private higher educational institutions as these would overcome some of the rigidities in the current system.

The export of our educational services will benefit not only Australia, but our whole region." "The criminal courts will not tolerate the affairs of police boys clubs being handled in any other way than with complete integrity," Sir Laurence said. Jones had become involved in the offences because of his gambling and at a stage when his life was "beginning to crumble around "His marriage came to an end about the time of these offences and although he has married again, it is obvious these convictions have had a considerable effect on his life generally." Sir Laurence said Kelly was not involved in the falsification of the documents to which the charges against Jones related. However, he had lent his name as a winner of the art union and had gone with Jones to collect the Mercedes-Benz from a motor dealer. The NSW Court of Criminal Appeal yesterday reduced the jail sentences imposed on two men convicted in relation to a fraudulent art union. A former secretary-supervisor of the Parramatta Police-Citizens Boys Club, Christopher Robin Jones, 41, had his sentence reduced from five to four years, and his non-parole period from three years to 12 months, dating from April 15 this year.

Jones's brother-in-law, Gary Michael Kelly, was placed on a $1,000 good behaviour bond for two years instead of serving 2Vi years jail with a 12-month non-parole period. On April 15, a District Court jury acquitted Kelly, 34, of Avoca Beach, of a charge of conspiring to defraud, but found him guilty of obtaining property by deception. On August 2, the Court of Criminal Appeal upheld Jones's appeal against a similar conspiracy charge and quashed his conviction. Yesterday, the court dismissed his appeal against convictions for obtaining property by deception and three charges of uttering forged documents. However, the three appeal judges agreed that in the circumstances, the sentences of five years concurrent on each count were too severe.

The offences related to Art Union No. 14 conducted by the By HUGH WHITE CANBERRA: Mr Hawke has vigorously defended his Government's plan to cut veterans' entitlements. "I make no apology for saying that the Government sought to find savings in the Veterans' Affairs portfolio," the Prime Minister said yesterday while opening the Returned Services League's national conference in Canberra. "We would have been irresponsible if we had allowed a situation to continue where pensions were being paid virtually to anyone who came forward." Mr Hawke's comments clearly hint that the Government will not be backtracking significantly when its redrafted Veterans Entitlements Bill goes before Parliament next month. An earlier version of the bill, which tightened the standard of evidence required to justify a pension claim and cut some benefits at a saving of almost S40 million a year, was passed for only six months to give time for further negotiations with veterans groups, including the RSL.

Mr Hawke said that such consultations have now taken place, and he praised the role of the RSLs national president.
