"So it's been good," she says. It's easy to hate Kate. She's one of these charming, bright, highly articulate 13 year olds that reminds middle-aged journalists of how when they were 13 they could barely write their initials in the ground with a tree branch. I have to remind myself that they know me from Neighbours.

"I'm very conscious of it. Like, totally. walk down the street and you can feel the eyes and people taking double glances at you. It was hard to get used to, but now it's getting better." As is seeing her face in magazines. "It's just weird because I never really thought that I'd get here," she says.

"I'd hoped, but now that I'm here it's sort of 'wow'." Carla Bonner is 26. Playing a tomboyish, opinionated 20-year-old, she says, is no great challenge. "It's easy. I've been there before, I've done it before," she chirps." Landing a regular spot on Neighbours was a major break for Carla. A student of the Australian College of Dramatic Arts in South Melbourne, she did a lot of auditions, several commercials, corporate videos and a few bit parts on shows such as The Man From Snowy River and Raw FM.

So the gig on Neighbours is the proverbial "dream come "To be paid for doing something you love is wonderful and it's Neighbours," she says emphatically. "Neighbours is just so huge all over the world." She hopes the part will lead to bigger and better film and TV roles, which will allow her "to be seen and New kids on the block: Holly Valance, Kate Keltie and Carla Bonner. taken as a serious actor from now on." on-set tutor is a big help, she says, but "if it just gets too hard, sure, I might drop it, though I'm going to try really hard to stay in And hanging out with friends is hard, she adds, but she works to maintain her social life. Juggling school and friends with what is, in effect, a full-time job, Kate knows she probably has more work experience and more highly developed communication skills than most people in their 20s. "When come here (to the studio) I'm acting like a totally different person," she says.

"I've sort of got two different personalities. Here, I'm more mature and you can talk about more detailed things. When I go back to my friends it's a whole different thing. I guess I am pretty mature for my age because I have been doing this for a while." The biggest difference Kate has felt so far since appearing on Neighbours is the street recognition factor. "With this it was harder to adjust to because when people say 'hey, and they start talking to For Holly Valance, getting the role of Felicity on Neighbours was a case of being thrown in at the deep end.

With but a few Just Jeans and Wave milk commercials under her belt at the age of 16, Neighbours is her first major exposure on TV. She hadn't even done that much auditioning before she got the job. Fortunately, her modelling experience kept her nerves in check. "I was used to the casting calls every day, sometimes three or four castings in a day, and you can't be nervous for them, and you don't worry whether you'll get the job or not because there'll be plenty more later. So I didn't really care whether I got (Neighbours) or not because I didn't want to be too hung up about it or devastated if I didn't get it.

Then I got it and I was like 'oh'!" "A lot of people thought me getting this was so glamorous, and that was the same with modelling. I knew that wasn't the case at all, so I never had high expectations of coming to sit in my own chair with HOLLY written on the back of it:" Though, she insists, there are moments of real glamor on the set, and this reporter was witness to one of them. During the shooting of a scene recently, Holly had to pour out a glass of orange juice. Between each take and there were about 10 she had to carefully pour the juice back into the bottle so she could then pour it out again during the next take. To her eternal credit, she didn't spill a drop.

"Pouring orange juice back into its bottle is definitely one of highlights of my career so far," she says proudly..
