WALTERS, lohn (lack) losenh. Wednesday, March 17, 1999 DEATHS FUNERALS 20 The Sydney Morning Herald OBITUARIES Lee Falk that his exploits were read by more than 100 million people (in more than 1,000 newspapers and in 15 languages) around the world every week. In Spain he is called El Fantasma. In France he is La Fantome and in Italy II Lobo Maskerati. Falk took the view that creating a comic strip was similar to writing a play or a screenplay: "I think the art of writing a comic strip is closer to the theatre and to film technique than any other writing I know," he said.

"When I create stories for Mandrake and Phantom, I write a complete scenario for the artist in which I detail the description of the scene, the action and the costumes. With such a scenario in front of him, a cameraman could take this and shoot it, or a comic artist can take the scenario and draw it." Falk was born in St Louis, Missouri, and graduated from the University of Illinois. He worked in secret intelligence with the Office of War Information during World War II and later enlisted in the US Army. After the war, Falk turned to playwriting and theatrical production. For many years he was the owner of summer theatres in Massachusetts and a winter theatre in Nassau in the Bahamas.

He enjoyed travelling and made several visits to Australia, some of them connected with plans to introduce the Phantom to the cinemas of the world. On one such visit, in 1988, he told Philip Clark (the ABC announcer who was then a Herald reporter) that part of the Phantom's enduring appeal was the character's mystique and his "strong moral "The Phantom is a marvellous role model because he wins against evil. Evil does not triumph against the Phantom," Falk said. He added that the Phantom never involved himself in politics except that "he hates dictatorships and is in favour of democracy. He is also opposed to any violation of human Falk also allowed the Phantom to play a leading role in America's early war against drugs the "Say No" campaign of the 1980s.

"I've tried to keep him current," Falk explained, "by involving him in stories abouts drugs, plane hijackings and muggings. "The Phantom came out of my childhood interest in great myths and legends and my reading of books like Tarzan Cartoon genius 1911-1999 The creator of two of the world's most famous comic strip characters Mandrake the Magician and The Phantom has died in New York at' the age of 87. Leon "Lee" Falk, who lived in Manhattan, died after an illness of several weeks, according to Ted Hannah, a spokesman for the King Features Syndicate, which distributed his work to newspapers and magazines around the world. The cause of death was congestive heart failure, Hannah said. Falk was a young college student when he conceived Mandrake the Magician a hypnotist who used his powers to fight crime.

The strip, which has been drawn by artist Fred Fredericks since 1965, is still syndicated in 125 American newspapers. In 1936, Falk developed The Phantom, which follows the exploits of a costumed superhero. King Features also distributes that strip, which runs in more than 500 US newspapers. At the height of the strip's popularity, the Phantom known as the man who cannot die and, thus, as the ghost who walks was probably the world's most popular comic strip hero. Falk Once reckoned and Mandrake the Magician and the Enchantress.

In a obituary on the Internet (www.fam.aust. com deep woodslee falk. html) Bryan Shedden notes that Falk continued to script both The Phantom and Mandrake "right up until his last "He was literally the last active comic-strip creator whose work survives from the 1930s into the 1990s. It can truly be said that Lee's accomplishments equal those of the classic characters he created. He will be sorely missed but fondly remembered for the wonderful legacy of adventure stories he has left us." Falk is survived by his wife, the stage director Elizabeth Moxley, three children from a previous marriage and a brother.

AP-Dow Jones and Robin Hood. I also liked the mystique of the Greek and Roman myths. "The Bandar pygmies who idolise the Phantom and guard him and his many secrets came from Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Tales." The Phantom had his own army of devoted readers and a large army it was at that in Australia. The local fan club in 1988 was estimated at more than 4,000 and said to include the former prime minister Bob Hawke, the rugby league star Wally Lewis and the former Test cricketer Bill Lawry. In addition to his comic strip work, Falk also produced more than 300 plays and directed about 100 others.

They featured stars such as Dame May Whitty in Night Must Fall and Charlton Heston in Bell, Book and Candle. He also wrote several plays and two musicals, Happy Dollar LANGFORD. REMEMBER LEGACY 76 years ago Legacy made Agnes Bernelle first non-stationary nude on the English stage. In 1963 Bernelle put together her first solo show, based on Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht's songs, at Peter Cook's Establishment Club in Soho. She was destined to perform this material for the rest of her life, and it led to collaborations with an eclectic range of musicians, including Marc Almond and Elvis Costello, who was executive producer on her 1985 album, Father's Lying Dead on the Ironing Board With their two sons (later to be joined by a daughter), Bernelle and Leslie moved to his ancestral home in Ireland in 1963. But their marriage ended in 1969 when she met the architectural historian Maurice Craig. In Dublin Bernelle worked in radio, theatre, film, television and cabaret.

She also featured in Was Tliat Little Girl, a TV documentary in which she returned to Berlin to perform her cabaret material and explore her roots. Her final screen performance was last year, in Still Life. She is survived by Maurice Craig, her two sons and her daughter. Michael Hewitt The Guardian, London London, where her father wrote and directed low-budget films. With the war, Bernelle performed with the London-based Freier-Deutscher Kulturband (Free German League of Culture).

She was also Vicky, "the Sailors' in Allied broadcasts to Germany. She married her Irish husband, Desmond Leslie, an RAF fighter pilot, in August 1945. They stayed in London, and in the 1950s her friends included Claus von Bulow and the exiled King Farouk of Egypt She played opposite and was directed by Orson Welles in a BBC radio series, and as Salome became the in Berlin; her mother was a provincial German and her father a wealthy Jewish Hungarian who owned several theatres and wrote lyrics for satirical cabarets. In The Fun Palace, Bernelle wrote that, although her formal education was not extensive, she was receptive to a world of music, literature, theatre and opera. Marlene Dietrich was a family friend and young Agnes made her debut on screen aged seven in a comedy, a self-confessed "little monster" playing a sailor-suited boy.

Then the Nazis came to power. In 1936 the family moved to Singer 1923-1999 She sang the ballads of Bertolt Brecht but she also turned the songs into her own reality. Agnes Bernelle, who has died aged 75, used a quote from Gertrude Stein "Everything is so dangerous that nothing is really frightening" to introduce her memoirs, Tlie Fun Palace (1996). The actress and singer lived her life, its successes and. hardships, with humour and warmth.

And her own story surely surpassed the plots of the films and plays in which she appeared. She was bom Agnes Bernauer for the widows and children of Australians who die in war or subsequently.
