Fenecli oonieback Bird life threat after big fuel spill it's in 1 as names iff PSMt 2 "S-fed A MASSIVE fuel spill on the NSW South Coast is likely to cause severe environmental damage. About 32,000 litres of aviation fuel spilled onto the road, paddocks and rivers after a Shell tanker overturned on the Princes Highway at Brouglilon Village, near Berry. Senior Sergeant John Marre S2id yesterday the highway was closed for more than six hours on Friday night while emergency rescue workers and fire brigade officers tried to release the trapped driver and clear the fuel from the road. "All six fuel ments ruptured, releasing its entire contents," he said. Horse kilted "The driver was not injured but a horse was killed after the tanker hit a tree which then ricocheted, hitting the animal which was grazing in a nearby paddock." A State Pollution Commission Control spokesman said it was inevitable the spill would effect large amounts of marine life, birds and vegetation.

He said it was first thought that most of the fuel had been soaked into the ground. But a daylight inspection yesterday-revealed the fuel had spilled into Broughton Creek. Pollution Control officers worked day and night trying to stop the fuel flowing into the Shoal-haven River from Broughton Creek, where it first entered the river svstem. ANITA CAT ALANO WORLD featherweight champion Jeff Fenech said yesterday he may end his short retirement if doctors can repair his damaged hands. Fenech, 25, said he had been offered S6 million for three bouts by a group of Sydney businessmen.

American promoter Bob Arum, who staged this morning's Dennis Andries-Jeff Harding title fight, wants Fenech to visit a Los Angeles specialist whose hand surgery has prolonged the careers of world champions such as Donald Curry and Milton McCrory. The "Marrickville Mauler-retired from boxing on April 8 after retaining the WBC featherweight title with a pair of badly damaged hands against Marcos Villasana in Melbourne. But as a mark of respect for a great world champion and in the hope that he would reconsider his decision the WBC will still rate Fenech as king of the featherweights until at least August. It is believed that the WBC will immediately provide Fenech with another world title opportunity if he does come back. A bout with former two-time champ Jose Luis Ramirez for the vacant WBC lightweight title looms as a strong possibility later in the year.

Fenech showed he still has plenty of firepower when he used a right to the body and right to the chin to deal with an attacker at the Caesar's Palace Casino earlier this week. At yesterday's media conference Fenech still stressed that From GRANTLEE KIEZA in Atlantic City fighting again was the last thing on his mind. He will spend next week holidaying with close friend James Packer, son of Australia's wealthiest man Kerry Packer, in London. But successful surgery isn't the only factor Fenech needs to consider before planning any comeback to the ring. Fenech's weight has ballooned, some say by as much as 12 kilos, since his successful defence against Villasana.

He "bulked-up" to pursue a career in rugby league -first with Leichhardt Juniors before joining Parramatta in the premiership last month. Parramatta haven't rushed the former world boxing champion, opting instead to let him get a feel of the pace of the game. Playing He sat on the bench in reserve grade for several games before playing a full 80 minutes in a lower grade encounter two weeks ago. Eels general manager Denis Fitzgerald gave him permission to miss this weekend's round so he could join the Harding camp in America. Fenech's last visit to a gym was a month ago when he joined Australian junior Bantamweight titleholder Peter Mitre vskiin a workout.

"I've only come back to sharpen my condition, mate," Fenech said at the time. "I haven't been on the road since I fought Villasana and ith the additional weight I felt sluggish." Couple in midnight sea rescue A SYDNEY couple are today resting at Lizard Island, far north Queensland, after a dramatic midnight rescue off a nearby reef.

Rex and Eileen Rickard, of Beecroft, were sailing their 18-metre steel-hulled ketch Caresse north from Cape Bradford when they ran aground at Linnet reef on Friday. "We hit under full sail and were on our side with water rushing into the cabin in minutes," Mr Rickard said. A rescue boat from the Lizard Island resort finally pulled them free at midnight. The couple had been crawling around their yacht, which lay at a 45-degree angle for more than 12 hours. The first attempt by Gamefisher, a 14-metre mariner, to pull the yacht free at high tide failed when the tow line snapped.

Steve Chittleborough, 33, skipper of the rescue boat, said: "If they hadn't saved Caresse last night, she would have been stranded on the reef for another week due to tides." The Rickards, in their 60s and retired, have been cruising the east coast for the past six years and intend to continue sailing to the Barrier Reef.
