As sure an indicator of imminent mediocrity as any, Pamela Stephenson is cast as a supporting actress. Funny this woman, may occasionally be, but her most obvious cinematic talent to date has been an ability to sniff out and ensnare lifeless roles. The jokes were old when Moses wrote his 10 punchlines (let's confuse "prostrate" with ho and there are a lot of people hitting each other, hitting inanimate objects, hurting themselves and falling over. The sad thing is that movies like this are so inoffensive that you can't build up the vitriol. Their weariness tends to makes you couchbound you lose the energy to walk to the television to switch over, and then you kick yourself afterwards for watching it.

Jon Casimir Subtitles, for the hearing-impaired. YELLOW EARTH On SBS at 8.30 pm YOU need patience for Yellow Earth. The impact of the film is largely derived from the cinematography and the impressive undulations of the landscape, elements sadly lost on the small screen. Set in a remote, poverty stricken backblock of northern China, it displays certain idiosyn-cracies of Chinese cinema which will ensure that the merely curious don't last past the first ten minutes. But this exquisite film is worth slowing down for.

It caused a sensation when released in the Peoples Republic Of China. Although it incorporates the Chinese popular taste for opera, it is visually so rich, with performances so extraordinarily resonant, that it breaks from strictly didactic and stilted traditions. Life in Shaanxi Province in 1939 is finders KEEPERS On 9 at 8.30 pm SOMEWHERE out in the Nevada desert, way past the Manson Family ranch, is a mysterious place nobody has ever seen, a graveyard where worn-out scripts go to die. Robbing them of their dignity, greedy Hollywood producers have lined all the Tinseltown escape routes with steel traps and hired boundary riders to escort the little critters back to the studio for another spell on the treadmill. Thus, we have the kind of film you see on Channels Nine or Ten on Monday nights.

It's light, it's zappy, it's full of action and the bimbo count is high, but afterwards you feel like you've eaten three kilos of blancmange. For Cui Qiao the future promises enslavement to domestic chores, her father, then a husband. Then Gu Qing strides into town. An idealistic young emmissary of the revolution, Gu is collecting folk songs for the Army, but with his talk of education and equality for women and a new social order, he turns Cui Qiao's despair into an unbearable longing to be free. When he leaves, promising to return, she is faced with the prospect of imminent marriage or running away. Cui Qiao's heart-rending songs, the infinite journey promised in the swollen waters of the nearby river, and the primal insistence of ancient Chinese rituals, provide a disturbing counterpoint to questions about the revolution and the meaning of communism for ordinary people.
