What is surprising is that not once in this half hour does Lisa utter words such as "strewth" or "bonza" or "I'm as dry as a dead dingo's Were this an English sitcom, she would undoubtedly spend most of her time brushing the corks away from her eyes and wondering where the flies were. The conflict in the show arises from Lisa's relationship with the eldest son, Danny, who feels (like the emotional two-year-old that all American adolescents must be, judging from their television shows) that she is muscling in on his turf, taking away his status as the most important non-parent in the household.

Danny and Lisa have joint access to the second car. Will he get it for his "sure thing" date or will Lisa keep it in case the baby sister, Melissa, gets sick? Jon Casimir Subtitles, for the hearing-impaired. THE IMMORTAL STORY On SBS at 8.30 pm ORSON Welles spent four years composing a love letter to the Danish writer Karen Biixen, whom he worshipped. She died before he finished the letter and this film, Welles's interpretation of a Biixen story, may be seen as a substitute for that missive. If so, it is a two-faced Valentine, for Welles both pays homage to the author for sharing his thematic concerns, and curses her at the same time.

"This is my story it can't be yours," cries the central character Mr Clay a wealthy, decaying merchant, played by Welles. Set in 19th century Macau, the plot sees Clay discover that a story he savoured alone, told to him years before by a sailor, is a well-known legend. It concerns an impotent, rich old man who offers a sailor 20 pounds to sleep LIVE-IN On Nine at 8 pm HAVE you ever noticed that if you turn the sound down on the television you can still usually tell within five seconds what kind of show you are watching? Soapies, sitcoms, dramas, news they all have their own immediately identifiable filming styles. Live-In, shot in wondrous Sitcom-vision, is no exception. The people grin inanely when they're not speaking, wear bright colours, run up and down the stairs a lot and exaggerate their facial expressions.

Turn the sound up and you get the run-of-the-mill US sitcom scripting, top-heavy on teenage sexuality and family togetherness. This recipe, however, also features an exotic ingredient, an Australian nanny in the shape of Lisa Patrick. This is not a first Facts Of Life added an Australian character to its em Jackie Bob SUBJECT TO LATE ALTERATIONS. GUIDE PREVIEW- Orson Welles an outpouring of love on screen. RADIO ger.

1 Beyond Midnight with his young wife, giving him a worthy heir to his fortune. (The story is, of course, his own.) Dismayed, Clay decides to wrest back ownership of the story by making it happen, making it He sends his clerk out to find the woman of the story, who returns with Virginie Ducrot (Jeanne Moreau), the daughter of Clay's former partner, whom Clay made bankrupt and led to suicide. Despite believing that the story participants move at his bidding, Clay is unable to control events and the story takes on its own life. Clay, the author, exhausted by his creation, dies. The story is a thematic maze, well worth negotiating.

Welles's concern about his own work which, like this film, was almost always "bringing to life" existing texts, is evident. And, like Clay's inheritance, although his stories live beyond him, they are no longer his alone if they ever were. Belinda Chayko 2UW 1107 5am Bazz and Pilko. 9 Col Mooney. Noon Trevor Sinclair.
