PAUL KENT Shannon Taylor knows that now, finally, his destiny lies in his own hands the ones he uses to beat up opponents. His promoter, Bill Mordey, had it confirmed yesterday that the World Boxing Council had issued a directive for the No 1 -ranked Darrell Coley to fight No 2 Taylor, with the winner to fight undefeated champion Oscar De La Hoya by the end of the year. A month of manoeuvring has ensured Taylor a chance at what should be a SUS1.5 million pay day against the American superstar, the biggest name in boxing today. "People have been asking me 'When is Bill going to get you a title and it's been hard because I knew what Bill's plans were but couldn't say anything," Taylor said. Mordey was asked three weeks ago to show-reason why Taylor should be ranked at No 2.

He pointed out Taylor's knockouts of three former world champions, decking Livingstone Bramble and Antonia Riveira in one round, and Jake Rodriguez in three. By comparison. Bramble went the distance against Kostva Tszyu and Tszyu took six rounds to stop Rodriguez. The WBC's board of governors then voted unanimously to match No 1 against No 2, with the winner to be De La Hoya's mandatory challenger, most probably in December. Coley, who has twice before knocked back Mordey's advances to fight Taylor, has protested against the decision.

Taylor is unconcerned, aware he must beat Canadian champion Tony Badeah on April 16 before meeting Coley. The decision to chase De La Hoya, the best fighter in the world after light-heavyweight Roy Jones Jr, was not made lightly. "He's in a tough division and there is no easy belt to go after," Mordey said. "If he fights Felix Trinidad he gets maybe and if he ins it'll take him six fights to get to SUS1.5 million. Just fighting De La Hoya he should get that." Taylor is in heavy sparring with world lightweight contender Lovemore Ndou, who fights Mexican Miguel Chavez at Merrylands Bowling Sport and Recreation Club a fortnight from today.

"I feel the key factor against De La Hoya is that I'm not going to be scared of him one bit," Taylor said. "He can't fight inside, and with my high defence and if I keep coming forward, it'll be too much pressure. But he's a snappier puncher and he's got great sparring. "Over the next six months I'll be importing sparring partners from overseas, so I'll be getting that, too. I'll just get inside his jab and bust him up to the body." Justice Campbell: Court c'ship semi-f: A 0 Bnen White Earles Curry 310 Cox A Hughes Dryden Williams Auckland: -South African cricket captain Hansic Cronje has defended his team's selection policies in the wake of criticism from his own board.

The United Cricket Board of South Africa issued a statement on Thursday expressing "consternation" that two teams were chosen for one-day internationals aainst New Zealand last week which breached the board's policy on selecting multi-racial sides. The South African team for the second and third one-dayers at Christehureh and Auckland respectively were entirely made up of white players: opening batsman Herschelle Gibbs was dropped after the first match of the series at Dunedin on February 14. Cronje said in Auckland: "We followed the guidelines as well as we could. Whatever mistakes we've made have been honest cricket mistakes. There's absolutely no political context to any of the selections we've made.

"It's been purely on cricketing decisions and if there was a board policy in place and we've breached that then I'm not aware of it." The rationale behind this type of defence includes (a) avoiding giving a trick away with anything else, (b) trump promotion, or (c) the urgent removal of an entry from dummy. Here we see an example of (c). Sadly at the table, while EW had the methods to solve an extraordinarily difficult problem, West missed the opportunity. East encouraged the queen of diamonds with the 10. When partner continued with the king, their signalling agreements allowed him to show "present count" with the 9, which promised an even number of cards left.

That made it clear South had another diamond. Overlooking the import of the second signal, West switched to a club and declarer was home. He won the club, then led a spade. There was no club loser, as dummy had a trump entry for the discard. West must lead another diamond at trick three to remove that entry, then later rise with the ace of spades and get out with a club.
