"A Day lo 03 1 fi STARRING HAYES GORDON MORGAN ST. JOHN la the i HIT MUSICAL OF THE YEAR the appearance of having been written and directed by enthusiastic amateurs not yet old enough to produce children, let alone films. And, but for the arguments offered by the venerable faces of Robert Beaity and J. R. Justice and other good old troupers, the same might reasonably be suspected of the acting.

Beatty is the airport's duty officer, a general "fixit" man who worries about everything from, diseased parra-keets to smuggled rugs, when all the time he would rather be flying like bearded Mr, Justice whose medical reports are better. Anthony Steele weaves in and out of the story texture as ah objectionably pleased-with-him-self pilot with shady Egyptian acquaintances. The love interest is entrusted to Margo Lorenz, as a German on the way to marriage in America, and nasal David Knight, as an American on the way to adventure in Israel. He gives a drearily synthetic portrait of the fresh, frank, humbug-less American boy. Cartoon. Plans at Theatre. Scientifically Heated. Remember rr SENTIMENT and c6m-edy intertwine quite agreeably in this inconspicuous but affectionately made little English ''film about a "pub" darts team's one-day outing across the Channel to Boulogne. The central story is a mild boy-meets-giil affair involving a serious young ex-soldier (Donald Sinden) and an ebullient French girl.

The girl (Odile Ver-sois) and her family are credibly presented more so than the standardised English comics who keep so un-realistically true to form, even though some reliable character actors (Stanley Holloway, James Hayter and others) do the best tney can to round them out. One suspects that smart editing has much improved what was in the first place rather slow-moving script: the separate adventures of the half-dozen darts throwers are inter-cut with an ingenious sleight-of-hand that leaves no time to wonder whether they are really so amusing or original. (Lyric). "Cuckoo In The Nest" THIS unimportant little film, though it expects rather much co-operation from its audience in the generation of laughs, is an entertaining time-machine journey back through 20 or 30 years to the heyday of twittering English farce when Ben Travers (who wrote it) and Wodehouse were in their prime. All the old familiars are there in the standard plot about the man and the woman who have to pretend to be married in order to get a night's shelter at a stormswept country inn, and who have to talk pretty fast when their real spouses and in-laws descend upon them.

Purring Kay Kendall is given rather less scope for comedy than her suave style deserves, and there is a good deal of dithering monotony from tall, lean, and talkative Brian Reece, whose long chin and long nose would, surely meet in nutcracker style if it was not for the little bob of moustache that clogs the hinge. The best of the intermit-ent fun comes from Stanley Holloway, as a brandy-fancying major with an upswept moustache and a naughty twinkle, and from Joan Young and Fabia Drake as the holy innkeeper and the overbearing ma-in-law whose countenances suggest that they feed exclusively on boiled rhino-cerous' blood. (Victory.) "Theodora, Slave Empress" THE story of the dancing-girl who became the powerful empress of the great Justinian is as absurd as anything Hollywood has invented; but it is sober history, and when history itself is absurd who can condemn the excesses of screenwriters? Essentially it is quite as vulgarly silly as its Hollywood counterparts, but it spreads its wares with rather more style and maturity. Gianna Maria Canale and Georges Marchal, as Theodora and Justinian, make a handsome couple, not entirely devoid of dignity. (Palladium.) "The Magnificent Matador" FILMGOERS who have more sympathy with bullfighting and more patience with the mystique surrounding it than we have may find some incidental interest in the authentic bullring sequences of this drama, which was filmed in Mexico and-treats its subject with all the deadly seriousness of a "fan." But even they must feel that the film lacks the personalities to make its attitude even temporarily convincing: glum Anthony Quinn suggests very little passion or pride as the famous matador who, for obscure reasons, runs away from an important fight; Maureen O'Hara brings a jarring streak of vulgarity to the role of the society playgirl who helps him through his crisis.

The mediocre colour is at its best in some of the London night scenes.

The dramatic tension is at its least slack when an airliner lands in thick fog. The romantic feeling is perhaps warmest when the soundtrack contemplates the night noises of the Thames shipping. (Lyceum) "Texas Lady" THERE isn't much style, tension, or solidity of characterisation in this shallow piece about a brave and handsome woman who inherits a newspaper in a roaring cattle town where free speech is not encouraged by the richest ranchers, and about a supremely cool who helps her lead a "revolution." Claudette Colbert is not fortunately cast as the brave young editress. The sparkling and elegant star that Claudette was a few years ago is scarcely to be seen in the insecure, somewhat defeated personality acting the leading role of this film. Barry Sullivan is shallowly effective as the gambler; and Ray Collins is suitably pugnacious as the untameable cattle-king.
