The Sydney Morning Herald Saturday, November 18,1989 29 God remains an issue in Queensland The battles on the hustings are I Fred Nile will face stiff competition for the "God vote" in the Queensland election, reports JOHN LYONS. God had the franchise for I Queensland's election on Saturday week, he'd probably take his pencil and voting papers. Vote believe in capital punishment for innocent beings." Asked by the Herald if she would put the same question to her four daughters she said: "I know' that's what they would say." Nevertheless she agreed. When we reported back for their answers she replied: "We have decided it is not a question we should be asked because we understand the nature of man and know human beings cannot foretell what they would do in the future. Therefore we don't know what we would do.

But if a law is there to forbid an action it makes it much easier for the person to do the right thing." The Logos Foundation's Derek Brown said there had "not really" been co-operation in the campaign with Call to Australia but "I think in some areas there would be quite a strong association of views." Asked about Logos's association with the National Party, Mr Brown said Logos had opposed the Nationals changes to the education system last year. Of Logos's desire to rid Queensland of homosexuality, he says the fact a law is on the statutes is "the best safeguard for Labor is claiming its polling is showing a swing to them on primary voting of 7 per cent But needing 15 seats, the swing must come in the right seats, with Labor's hopes pinned on seats in northern Queensland such as tion, homosexuality, pornography and capital punishment (Labor leader Wayne Goss did not provide his views), the Catholic Archbishop of Brisbane, the Most Rev Francis Rush, responded devastatingly: "I do not know who these Logos people are, where they come from or what their purpose is. Certainly there are more Christian moral questions than the ones they ask. That should be obvious to anyone who has lived through the recent history of Queensland. The Fitzgerald Inquiry had more to do with the corrupt use of power and money than with sexual immorality my personal opinion is that a return to the death penalty would be barbaric the Catholic Church teaches compassion for the homosexual while condemning homosexual acts It is fascinating the extent to which Logos, with a national membership of about 12 people, has been able to affect the campaign agenda.

The same questionnaires Logos sent to the three leaders also have been sent to all candidates, with results also to be published in advertisements. The Catholic Leader, which reaches every parish in Queensland, dispatched a reporter to Toowoomba to try to find Asked if the ALP expected many such votes he said: "I don't think there are too many religious fundamentalist votes for Labor but I think you will find a lot of very conservative people in the churches who will vote Labor for the first time." Fred Nile hopes his moral crusaders can capitalise on the turmoil in Queensland politics. "The whole electorate is in a state of flux," he says, predicting CTA can take at least seat, Glasshouse, where Mrs Rona Joyner is standing. Mrs Joyner is still a Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen loyalist she says the fault lay not with Sir Joh but some of those to whom he delegated. Asked about Tony Fitzgerald's finding of endemic corruption, she says: "Corruption is the outcome of the failure to control the moral questions in society." On December 2 Mrs Joyner's preferences will go to the Liberals because the Nationals had had a "God-given opportunity to bring back God-like policies into Queensland and botched it." Her views on abortion are immovable: asked the what-if-your-daughter-was-raped question, she says she would insist the child was born: "I don't execute vengeance on the one who breaks the law." Mr Brown claims Logos has received the support of four churches Garden City Assemblies of God, Christian Outbreak Centre, Christian Life Centre and "I think it's called Holland Park Baptist Church." He claims this represents rank and file support of up to 15,000 people.

Labor's campaign director, Wayne Swan, says the Logos Foundation has "massively funded" an anti-Labor campaign. "We're also copping it from the National Party at the moment they're putting an ad to air tonight saying we kill kids with heroin," he says. Mr Swan says the viewpoints of the Logos Foundation, Call to Australia and elements of the National Party coincide: "They're all from the Joh part of the National Party, not the Mike Ahern part of the party. Nonetheless, the ALP is taking seriously the religious fundamentalist movement. Says Mr Swan: "I don't underestimate the swing towards religious fundamentalism.

But up here it doesn't any longer equate with the conservative parties." between those who want "morality" to be the key issue and those who believe the institutionalised corruption uncovered by the Fitzgerald inquiry should be pre-eminent. The "morality" push is predominantly from Fred Nile's Call to Australia and an intriguing organisation called the Logos Foundation as well as elements of the National Party, including recently-installed Premier Russell Cooper. Fred Nile takes his brand of Bible politics to Queensland tomorrow for the campaign launch for Call to Australia (CTA), standing three candidates in Brisbane seats. He insists the candidates are on their own financially and that CTA in NSW is financially "borderline" and in no position to be sending funds North. But rather than lack of finances being a problem, the pursuit of the "God vote" has momentarily been derailed by the mainstream churches who have been quick to distance themselves from it.

After the Logos Foundation placed full page newspaper advertisements outlining the views of Mr Cooper and Liberal Leader Angus Innes on abor One for. Fred Nile's Call to Australia and give his preferences to the Liberals rather than the Nationals. i And as for Wayne Goss's ALP, they'd be at the bottom of the ticket At least that's the way Fred Nile's star candidate in Queensland, Mrs Rona joyner, appears to see it. I Only in Queensland does God remain an election issue. Already, He has dominated part of the frenetic chase for votes in the State's most interesting election for years.

But God would certainly feel confused as He walked past those distributing How-to-Vote cards. As well as Call to Australia, the controversial Logos Foundation would likewise lay claim to the moral high ground. Labor is being hit by the moral right-wing on two fronts. Mr Nile hopes to capitalise on the turmoil. out more about the Logos Foundation: The resultant story, headlined "The death penalty 'will hold society together'," was damaging to Logos.

It quoted spokesman Derek Brown on capital punishment: "The role of civil government is to punish the wrongdoer, not to seek to reform him. Christians and all other citizens are not to repay evil with evil. Rather, they are to rely upon civil government to cairns and Kockhampton. Il jsefc. 1 ii i ii.

It's Epson's reputation for reliability that has made it the market leader in printers.

In fact, its no secret that Epson is the benchmark by which other printers are judged. Still, Mr Joyce did say that one of the main attractions for him, in choosing one of our printers, was that they were all so easy to use. All of our printers (and there are four low cost models to choose from) are designed with "ease of use" in mind, because, we figured professional people have better things to do than spend days poring over "printer instruction1' manuals. Pausing for a moment, Mr Joyce did admit however, that our surprisingly low price (for the world's best printer) did sway him a little (well, he is a businessman after all). So, now that he's the proud owner of an LX-400, he can rest assured that the only machines in his workshop, that will constantly "brakej' are his cars.
