Snead, Midway, pastor of the Midway Christian Church, sifter a short. Illness. Mrs. Snead had heen In declining health for some time, hut It was only recently her condition became serious. Born in Washington county, in 1S6G, Mrs.

Snead was aged sixty- nine at her death. 'She had been a resident of Bluefield for the last thirty-three years. Mrs. Snead was a faithful memuer of the Christian church, having united with it a number of years ago. She was well known in Bluefield and had many friends here.

Sho Is survived by five children, the Rev. Wm, Snead and W. G. Snead. both of Bluefield; I.

Holmes, both of Salt- vtlle, Va. Her husband preceded to the grave twenty-eight years. The funeral service will be held from the Midway Christian church on Friday afternopn at 2 O'CIOCK, conducted by the Rev. C. M.

E. K. Northen, member of Bluefield College since the institution opened In September, 1922, will not return to the college nest year, according to news which became known Wednesday, confirming a rumor which has been prevalent in the community for several weeks. Dr. Northen has held the chair of Greek and Bible, having come to Bluefield College from Union University, Jackson, where he held similar position In the faculty.

Dr. Northen served two years as registrar for Bluefield College, and one year as secretary of the faculty. For some time he has been a member of the committee on courses. A profound thinker, an ardent Bible student and fluent speaker, Dr. Northen by his untiring efforts In the community won a place of effec- tion and esteem in the hearts ot the people.

His weekly Bible class, conducted at Hamilton Hall, Bland Street Mcthodfflt Church, has been a source of inspiration to leaders in church activities, and his pulpit supply work has been also of incalculable benefit. Since his stay in Bluefield, Dr. Northen has proved not only a valuable addition to the faculty of Bluefield College, but has taken a prominent part In all the reliigous anil educational phases of community life. Friends in Bluefield and tsurround- lpg cities will learn of the pending departure of Dr. Northern and his interesting family with deep regret.

Withers, former resident of Bluefield, who for the last year has been living in Florida, will regret to learn of his death which occurred at Miami, on Saturday, March 14. Fot- several years Mr.

This was from the home ot James B. Keith. The two other homes entered were those of R.

C. Fleshman and E. Sentz. But little was secured from the two latter places. This makes a dozen or more residences which have been entered during the past ten days and the thief has not yet been apprehended.

There have beey but few instances where the police have been notified until the day after the robbery. It would appear the robbers are in search of watches, money and jewelry. Police are scattering out through the residential sections as much as possible in hopes of catching the thieves and have been instructed to detain' all suspicious characters. Early last night two unknown men appeared on the front porch of the homo ot Mrs. B.

H. Lusk, Jefferson and Hancock streets. They had been sighted by one of Mrs, Dusk's children. Although unable to see the men herself Mrs. Lusk did not hesitate- to bring a revolver into action.

She directed the fife into the darkness and fu the direction of her children sighted the men. Turning on the porch light Mrs. Lusk discovered the men had fled. She Immediately called the police. Police feel confident they are going to get the guilty parties if some citizen with good aim doesn't beat them to'it.

NET DECLINE SHOWN IN BITUMINOUS PRODUCTION W. II. rorterficld, well known young man ot Bluefield, who for the last two years has been an Inmate of the government tuberculosis sanitarium at Tucson, died last night, according to a message received here by his sister, Mrs. R. F.

Cox, from her brother, Strother Porterfield, also of Bluefield, who had arrived at Tucson yesterday morning. Strother Porterfield had left Bluefield last Saturday night. MrB. W. H.

Porterfield left Bluefield Sunday night with the expectation of reaching her huslvnd before his death, hut upon receipt of the message here last evening of his death relatives at once began trying to reach Mrs. Porterfield by telegram so as to turn her back. It was thought last night relatives would be able to get the message to her this morning before she left New Orleans for Tnscon. The remains will be started homeward tonight and are expected to arrive in Bluefield about Sunday. Strother Porterfield will accompany the remains.

The death of Mr. Porterfield had been expected for some time, as his condition had reached that point where hope had been abandoned. Mrs. Walter Racker, a sister of the deceased, who before her marriage was Miss Ora Porterfield, was with her brother at the time of his death. She lives in California, and had gone to Tuscon several days ago.

Mr, Porterfield was well and favorably known In Bluefield and was held in high esteem in this community. He was a young man of fine character and many sterling qualities. He had been associated with some ot Bluefield's leading business firms, was competent, and bore a splendid reputation in the community. He was reared In this city and educated the public schools of Bluefield and later "took a business course in one of the local business colleges. He was a.

veteran of the World War and it was while he was giving his services to his country that he developed the disease which has resulted, in his death. The was the son of W. T. Porterfield, of Bluefield. His mother preceded him to the grave, i having died in.

May 1923. It was shortly after her death Mr. Porter- field's condition became very serious and through the aid of the American Legion and the Veterans Bureau he was admitted to the government sanitarium in Arizona. Car loading totals for the first two days of last week wero substantially the same as those of the preceding week.

Tho totals during the remainder ot the week, howeve, fell off sharply and the accumulated losses in tonnage were sufficient to almost exactly offset the gain shown in the figures for the week of March 7 over the holiday week of February 28.
