4 1 2 The Arizona RepublicTHE PHOENIX GAZETTE Wednesday, May 24, 1 995 From Page 1 The shadowing took place this spring. It went so well that several of the doctors invited the girls to return for a second day. None of the girls became disenchanted with the profession. Instead, the activities only further cemented their desires to pursue health careers. Wanting to reward the students, Matz arranged for them to watch Hedley operate.

Hedley frequently uses the auditorium to train other surgeons, who come in from around the world to study his hip and knee replacement techniques. "They sit up here and eat bagels and talk while he operates," said Brandon Lee, a free-lance video-grapher who controls the operating room cameras for Hedley. "They don't have to scrub, so they love this." Three cameras are mounted in the operating room. Two have zoom and panning capabilities so viewers can get a close look at the instrument table and patient X- rays. The camera that gets the most use is mounted inside the movable light above the operating table.

Thus, viewers are treated to a blown-up view of the surgical site and the surgeon's hands at work. By the end of the three-hour operation the girls were tired but inspired. "I'm going to the University of Arizona next year," Hall said. "I'm going to major in anything that will direct me into surgery." ii if i fui i pmi in 111111111. mn urn y.mpi.i,.i wm i iniwn i i -Mi 1 I I ly I CAREGIVERS OPERATE "I'm just following the old railroad tracks here; otherwise he's going to have a very ugly incision," Hedley said as he sliced the patient's hip along jagged scars created by previous surgeries.

Hedley cut deeper into the patient's hip, moving gingerly through layers of fat and muscle to get to the bone and the existing prosthesis. Puffs of steam erupted from the widening wound as he grabbed and cauterized blood ves-f sets along the way. The girls were riveted to the screen, asking periodic questions about the patient's health and problems with the existing prosthesis and worrying about post-surgery pain. "Is he fat?" one asked as Hedley gently separated the gelatinous layers of the patient's rump. Hedley said the man, a former football player now in his 40s, was in good shape.

"It's normal to have a little bit of padding on your backside," he quipped. The girls got a kick out of the operating room banter the surgeons making dates for a steak dinner and arguing with nurses about which radio station to listen And no one got grossed out until Hedley picked up an oscillating saw and began buzzing his way through the patient's femur. "Eeeuuwwwww," they cried in unison, sliding down in their seats, Five of the girls want to become doctors. Two plan to be nurses and one a physical therapist. The program started out by getting the girls to see the relationship between community service and community well-being.

In December, they raised money to provide food and clothing for needy children. Another Mountain Pointe Senior Amy Tolonen teamed up with a family care nurse and ended up observing the births of three babies. And Jasmine Mid-tun, a 17-year-old junior at Mountain Pointe, helped patients with their physical therapy.

EAT UK CASTLE From Page 1 visitor center, said Bill Jacobson, historic preservation planner with Phoenix Parks, Recreation and Library Department.

Lamm said one of the rooms could be used for weddings and receptions. He said it would take about a year to repair the building and another year to revive its neglected desert garden. The castle was built in 1928 by Alessio Carraro. It was sold in 1931 to Phil Tovrea Sr. approved in 1989 for historic preservation.

Jacobson said Phoenix also owns the stone wall and a 10-foot-wide strip on each side of it. The remaining 38 acres were held in a trust for 13 tovrea heirs until earlier this year when they went to court and dissolved the trust. Jacobson said the city is having the property appraised in the hope of buying more of the property soon from the heirs. The castle could be used as a top branches. Outside the wall is the future.

Washington Street is filled with rush-hour traffic. Overhead is the drone from airliners. Across the street is a strip club. On the east edge of the property is a new freeway. On the west side is the Postal Service's main office.

Phoenix bought the castle and nearly 7 acres from the Tovrea family in 1992 for $1.7 million.
