The Tyrrell team, with its extraordinary six-wheel devices, has been gaining speed with every race this year, and must have given Ferrari a fright when second and third behind Lauda at Monaco. In addition, there Is the all-French effort mounted by Guy Ligier, who has built a new car to carry the revamped Matra V12 onuinp from the now defunct BRM.

Lauda has proved an ex-' cellent test driver as well as a champion race driver, and his abilities in the de-veiopment area are probably more valuable to the team than his. race driving. Having the best engine and a competitive chassis has given Ferrari six wins from six starts this year, but any student of the sport- knows how unpredictable race results can be. Like the occasions in 1960 when Stirling Moss whipped the dominant Ferraris at Monaco and i the Nurburgring in his obsolete Lotus. Driver skill still counts.

This was proved in Spain earlier this year when James Hunt was first across the line in his McLaren M23. Lauda finished second, but was awarded the race when Hunt was disqualified. Clay Regazzonl, took the US Grand Prix (West) ahead of Lauda. The results have shown that the 1976 model Fer-rari 312T cars, only slightly changed from the victorious 1975 machines, have kept their technical superiority. Most of this advantage is in the engine bay, although the current Ferrari chassis defies tradition by being first-rate. It took Ferrari eight years to come to terms with the Cosworth-Ford V8, which has powered all the Formula One champions since its first full year of competition in 1968. After several redesigns, the Ferrari flat 12 engine now has a clear power advantage over the ageing Cos worth V8.

Ferrari Jacques Lafitte, who was But despite all its races and records, 1976 could see the small company set what might well be an unsurpassable record. Ferrari has won all six rounds of the 1976 Formula One championship, the sport's premier competition, and co'uld win all 15 scheduled rounds. No other marque has done this. The next hurdle is tomorrow's Swedish Grand Prix on the flat Anders-torp circuit, which has a long back straight on which the Ferrari 312Ts will make good use of their horsepower advantage. Five of this year's races have been won by Nikl Lauda, the 1975 champion, while Ferrari's second th rd in Beiaium ana fnnrlh in the US.

In the early 1960s these endemic chassis problems forced the normally chauvinist Enzo Ferrari to hire two of the best development drivers in Britain. John Surtees and Michael Parkes.

But despite isolated successes, the problems continued until 1974. Lauda joined the team more horses in its stable, which leaves most of the other Formula One teams with second-rate engines. Another factor that has made the Ferrari 312T the dominant Fl machine of the past 18 months is its chassis which, at is the equal of the best British products. Amanda Tobin, a 15-year-old schoolgirl who learnt to play tennis alongside a Wollongong railway line, yesterday signed a five-figure contract with an international sporting goods manufacturer. Amanda, the Australian under 16 champion will leave next Friday as a member of an official team for a seven-week international tour of Europe and the United States.

The contract, with the Adidas company, is believed to be for $15,000 over three years. It involves complete clothing and racquet expenses and part travelling and accommodation expenses, and bonuses when Amanda wins tournaments. $15,000 in 3 years The contract signing is the start, of a commercial "war" be-, tween Australia's leading sports manufacturers. Coles, 25 and a fearless 171 cm (5 ft. Vh in), is improving every Saturday with the Demons and is confident of doing well today. Coles said: "Bob Skilton has played a tremendous part in my improvement.

He involved me much more in the game by mak-. ing me first rover. "He also has driven into us the ability to run, run and run. I finish up dreaming about it. "Everyone's a lot closer here at Melbourne.

People talk to you, whereas at Collingwood you hardly get a boo out of anybody' Coles faces similarly-built Col-ingwood rover Ray Shaw today and the outcome could be vital to their side's chances. Both sides were beaten last week but Melbourne has shown more consistent form, especially at home, and it should be too pacy for Collingwood.
