MARK LAWRENCE previews a play which has twice been withdrawn from TV-the first time when it coincided with the death of Pope Paul VI, and on the second occasion because of Pope John Paul I's death. I have to wake up and say today I will ring such and such or work on such and such. If you didn't do that you would just slip and not get anywhere." Cardinal Volponi also appeals to the German Ambassador whom he finds impotent i.n the face of the blind fury and demand for vengeance emanating from Hitler and officers The play's most powerful moments are provided by the closing scenes where Volponi desperately appeals to Borrelli to sign a statement disassociating himself from the ambush (in which, in fact, he was not involved) It is here that the agony of a radical mind, at peace with his God' but aghast at the actions of his "spiritual screams out at the viewer. Lest the reader presume that Borrelli earns all the points it should be noted that some of the harsh realities revealed by Cardinal Volponi during these exchanges occasionally make Borelli's idealism look very fragile The issues raised by Choice of Evils are not new but never more relevant. In a world seething with social change or the demand for it the role of the church remains a major consideration Choice of Evils is an intellectually stimulating play boasting good production qualities and excellent acting.
