MARK LAWRENCE previews a play which has twice been withdrawn from TV-the first time when it coincided with the death of Pope Paul VI, and on the second occasion because of Pope John Paul I's death. Songs from the wing of a Dove Wo Sharyn Cambridge KATHY KIZIL08 interview a battlar. the first time in her career she is without a recording contract. And her old manager has left show business to invest in a Gippsland enterprise. "I didn't realise how hard it would be for me on my own," she said.

"1 was in a tight unit for six years, under protective management. I did not see a side of the business that existed all along. "I did not know the world was like it is I have to push to go out and talk to people, to tell people I'm good. I have to promote myself." Earlier this year she released a single for EMI. You Take My Breath Away, by an English composer.

Despite some airplay and a clip on Countdown it was not successful. Ex-manager, Phil Dwycr blames himself for this; he said a record can't be success SHARYN Cambridge is slightly built, gently spoken and determined to be the first female singer songwriter to make it in Australia. Once vocalist for the Kp group Dove, she has en writing, singing and hoping ever since the group broke up last Octo-er. She recently impressed viewers of the Peter Couchman Show (ATV-0) with her song Still So Deep in Love. Like most of her work, it is melodious and middle-of-the-road, certain to have popular appeal.

Those who remember her from the Dove days will know her voice sweet, clear and strong. Her year on her own has been difficult, testing her perseverance. For ful without adequate promotion. Sharyn has three main objectives, to align herself with management, preferably with overseas connections, get a recording contract, and have her music published. In the year she has been on her own her interest has switched from performing to writing, to the extent that she doesn't mind if other people sing her songs, just so long as they are heard.

She said: "The hardest thing is to motivate yourself. When you are in a band you can bounce off the other members in the band with this I have to push myself and other people all the time. I have to wake up and say today I will ring such and such or work on such and such. If you didn't do that you would just slip and not get anywhere." In March, 1944, rasistanca fighters ambushed a column of Carman soldiers as they marched along Noma's Via Rasalla. Thirty-three of tha aoldiara war killed.

In retaliation Hitler ordered the execution of 10 Italian civilians for each of tha dead soldiers. In his play. Choice Of Evils. Jim Allen has taken this horrific event and inserted his own fictional characters to raise the general issue of the relationship between church and State. More specifically, he ashes for the viewer's judgement upon tha then Pope Pius XII who made no attempt to publicly protest or prevent the massacre.

The play will be shown in Stuart Wagstaff's World Playhouse at 8.30 pm on Friday, November 3. It is easy for the dogmatic Roman Catholic or humanist to quickly spring to one or more of the obvious conclusions but Allen has avoided as much as possible using the play to state his own beliefs. By exploiting a number of relationships he manages to present the complex arguments of all sides. The play's plot revolves around the fact that one of the hostages arrested and destined for execution is a priest, known for his sympathising with communist subversives This character, Fr. Don Borrelli is strongly played by Trevor Peacock.

The Father is convinced that "if the church is to survive it must acknowledge its mistakes and rediscover the spirit of Christ in socialism" The Papal rationale for remaining silent is conveyed during a scene between Stephen Murray as Pope Pius XII and David Burke as Cardinal Volponi Burke's rola is perhaps the most difficult. Tha Cardinal is aware of tha glaring errors of the church, horrified by the Pope's refusal to raise his voice in defence of the innocent victims Vet he has chosen to stay within the church in the hope that from within he can contribute to change. Cardinal Volponi also appeals to the German Ambassador whom he finds impotent i.n the face of the blind fury and demand for vengeance emanating from Hitler and officers The play's most powerful moments are provided by the closing scenes where Volponi desperately appeals to Borrelli to sign a statement disassociating himself from the ambush (in which, in fact, he was not involved) It is here that the agony of a radical mind, at peace with his God' but aghast at the actions of his "spiritual screams out at the viewer. Lest the reader presume that Borrelli earns all the points it should be noted that some of the harsh realities revealed by Cardinal Volponi during these exchanges occasionally make Borelli's idealism look very fragile The issues raised by Choice of Evils are not new but never more relevant. In a world seething with social change or the demand for it the role of the church remains a major consideration Choice of Evils is an intellectually stimulating play boasting good production qualities and excellent acting.

Recommended viewing. When she played a recording or Still So Deep in Love for this interview she beat time restlessly, walked around the office and finally stood where her expression could not be seen. She hopes to release this song as a single. She admires Joni Mitchell and Linda Lewis and said they inspired her to shape the way she writes. "What I write is fairly personal I mean I find it difficult to write objectively, to write about things that don't concern me.

I hear about writers who do that and I can't understand how they can." She has become very selective, a reason why she does not do much live work these days. She does not want to work in clubs, or floor shows, because, "I want to achieve recognition as a song writer to perform in places where my songs will Sharyn remains determined: "I won't leave this business till I'm on my last leg I love it and I'm not going to leave it.
