Bank on nordic fun at Tahoe ft) OV'p LAS VEGAS Doulder Station opens in August; joins Station Casinos mmwm AS VEGAS What is it? It's the steel skeleton of Boulder Station Hotel and Casino, an $85 million hotelcasino on the "Boulder Strip," built by Station Casinos, the parent of Palace Station Hotel and Casino. Like its sister property, Palace Station, Boulder Station is designed in a 19th century railroad theme and is destined to become a favorite of repeat visitors to the area. This is the first new hotelcasino on Las Vegas' east side since 1979 and the only property with direct access off 1-515. "Like Palace Station, we plan to provide the same value our hotel guests and local customers expect from our company.

We have taken all the things we learned with Palace Station, and built Boulder Station exactly the way we want it to be and exactly how our guests want it to be. It's another choice for repeat visitors to Las Vegas. Boulder Station will be handicap accessible, it will have five great restaurants, it will be roomy, friendly and comfortable. The casino itself will be beautiful with the glass dome and sky painting around the perimeter. We're very excited," said Joseph J.

Canfora, executive vice president and chief operating officer. the project will be open on schedule in August 1994. Located on 27 acres on the east side of Las Vegas, Boulder Station will house 300 hotel rooms, 2,000 parking spaces, a casino that will include over 2,000 slot machines, 40 gaming tables, a 70-seat keno lounge, a 626-seat bingo parlor, a Iilin'HMY You IANK, fnnn page 77 As one ski-area operator told me, "If don't get a snowstorm over the next week, we'll be in trouble." To make matters worse, a tew days before we were scheduled to leave, Arizona was hit by a major storm that dumped two feet of snow in the mountains. Suddenly, it seemed as if Arizona would have better cross-country skiing than Tahoe. Bummer.

That was our general state of mind as we arrived at Reno's airport and picked up our rental car a Toyoia 4 Runner that we were advised was necessary because of all the snow-covered highways we undoubtedly would encounter on our trip. We thought we should only be so lucky as we pulled out of the airport and headed for Interstate 80, which would take us to our hotel in Truckce, 35 miles est of Reno. Then, just ast we reached the interstate, we noticed that a wall of clouds was blocking our view of the mountains west of Reno. Suddenly, raindrops began falling on our windshield. Within minutes, the rain had turned to' sleet.

By the time we were five miles out of town, it began turning to snow. It seemed we were going to encounter a little snow after all. Correction: Make that a lot of snow, so much that before long we could barely see 10 feet in front of the car. By the time we reached Truckee, there were cars sliding all over. The California Highway Patrol was turning back all cars that didn't have chains or four-wheel drive.

We later learned that a slew of accidents forced officials to close 1-80 about 20 minutes after we reached our exit. We had made it just in time. We learned that the snow had been falling in the. area since 4 o'clock that morning and was expected to continue all night. The newspapers and television stations were calling it the biggest storm of the season.

We went to bed happy. The snow had arrived just in time for our weekend ski getaway. Now if only it would stop long enough for us to actually ski. Beauty of fresh runs The next morning dawned clear and bitter, cold, and the fresh snow all but guaranteed excellent skiing conditions. Our plan was to hit four different nordic ski areas over two days, beginning with Northstar-at-Tahoe, less than a 30-minute drive from the hotel.

Northstar is primarily a downhill ski area, but it also has a separate 65-kilometer cross-country trail system and telemark runs. The advantage to that setup is that even when the area is crowded, most of the people are skiing the downhill runs. On the morning we skied Northstar, ours were the first skis to touch the freshly groomed nordic trails. Because it is a downhill area, Palace Station Is Las The Way Excalibur welcomes royal singers fjum 1 Want It To Be! Service Is The Difference.
