arrested for an assault on Bobby Jean Cade, the estranged wife of his uncle. It was the kind of scandal Green Bay couldn't tolerate. And when Cade reportedly confessed to the crime to a psychologist after he was convicted, any hope he had of playing again for the Packers vanished. An unexpected call At first, Pepper Rodgers didn't recognize the voice or the name. After all, he hadn't heard from Mossy Cade since Rodgers' days as coach of the Showboats.

"I hadn't heard from him in years and he just called me out of the blue," Rodgers said. "He told me he's trying to get back into the (NFL), and he was looking for some advice. "He said every time he tries to get a good-paying job, they find out about his past. I sort of felt sorry for him. I worry about guys like Mossy." Cade hasn't played in the NFL since 1986.

He makes his home in Memphis, where he is married to the former Kim Wright, his fiancee when "the incident" as Cade calls it occurred. The couple has a son. Even while serving his IS months at a correctional institution, Cade knew the NFL would impose sanctions against him upon his release. But he was young. He reasoned he was paying his dues to society.

He thought he would play again. Now 28, Cade realizes time is short. He has worked at various jobs since his release in 1988, and said he is taking computer programming courses at night. He underwent counseling. He believes he has shown he is a stable, productive member of society.

"I have my head on straight," he said. "My wife has gotten me through the whole situation." Mossy won't talk about his past. But he doesn't mind discussing his future. He believes he has earned a second chance. When Mossy Cade was released, the Packers waived him and the Minnesota Vikings acquired his rights.

"Mike Cade was a good man," said Jay Denton, who coached the Cades I in football at Santa Cruz. "He's still a good man. Not even his closest family members saw this coming. Nobody in the world who knew him ever expected anything like that." i Mike Cade, 30, declined to be interviewed, but records show he led a troubled life after leaving ASU.

In 1985, he was placed on three I years' probation for aggravated as-; sault. In 1989, he pleaded guilty to a charge of resisting arrest that stemmed from a domestic dispute and received probation again. When Mike Cade was arrested in April for holding up a Valley National Bank on West Camelback in Phoenix, he told police he had lost his job at a treatment center for disabled teen-age boys because of a pending indecent-; exposure charge. Cade told police he needed money to pay for food, rent and child support. Records show he confessed to five previous bank robberies, which he told police all had occurred I between January and April of this year.

"We're not down on him," Denton said. "It was one act, and it was out of character for Mike. He's got too many good things going for him. He can lead a productive life, and I'll bet everything I've got he will." Mossy was even better "As good an athlete as Mike was, Mossy was better," said Bill Culp, who coached Mossy Cade in track and field at Santa Cruz. "I can only speculate he gave in to the temptation and frailties we're all subjected to." At Santa Cruz, Mossy Cade was a splendid all-around athlete.

As a senior in 1980, he ran the 110-meter high hurdles in 13.69 seconds, a national high school record at that time. His speed and aggressiveness made him the prototype football prospect at cornerback. But like his brother, Mossy passed up offers from ASU and UA. He signed with Texas. Unlike Mike, Mossy flourished at the collegiate level, eventually earning All-America' honors.

The San Diego Chargers chose him in the first round of the 1984 NFL draft. However, Mossy began his pro career with the Memphis Showboats in the fledgling United States Football League. When the USFL foundered, the Green Bay Packers purchased his NFL rights from the Chargers. Cade was blossoming into one of the league's best cornerbacks when he was iiLiiai iiiiiniiM .1, 1 iii.iniiii,ii in. Cade said drug offenders are often given second and third chances.

"Why doesn't Mossy Cade get another chance?" he asked. "The thing that's stopping me from playing is not that I can't play anymore, it's that word It's what I was charged with, what I went to jail for. 1 haven been banned. 1 was suspended for one season, but it's been treated like a ban by the NFL. Cade says he has documents that show Rozelle suspended him for a year and he should have been allowed to play last season.

He said requests to meet with new Commissioner Paul Tagliabue have fallen on deaf ears. "We haven't heard from Mossy Cade," NFL Director of Information Pete Abitante. "He has to petition the commissioner for reinstatement There would be a hearing set up and then a decision from the CommiS' sioner's Office. "I think (Cade) had talks with our office last year but to the best of my knowledge, we've had no more contact with Mossy. When and if we get a petition for reinstatement, then we 11 act on it.

Carl Poston, Cade's Houston-based agent, tells a different story. He said there has been correspondence with the Commissioner's Office, but Taglia bue has been reluctant to arrange a personal meeting. Meanwhile, Mossy Cade's hope of returning fades. "Realistically, no, I don't think I'll get to play in the NFL again," he said. Cade believes his chances were hurt when Brown County officials pressed perjury charges against him when he was incarcerated.

The charges later were dropped. "When I met with Rozelle, they asked for documents about that," Cade said. "When I left his office, I felt uncomfortable. It was like they had nailed the coffin shut on me." Although Cade would be in his prime at 28, few teams will take a chance on any player out of the game for four seasons, much less one with Cade's past. Cade claims he remains in good physical condition.

The Canadian Football League is a possibility, Poston said. The new World League of American Football is, too. But the WLAF is financed by NFL teams. And Cade will have difficulty getting work visas from Canada or other foreign countries. Fallen sons Folks in Eloy don't talk about Mike and Mossy much anymore.

Their nephew, Eddie, was the star of the team last fall. He has enrolled at ASU but won't be eligible to play there until the 1992 season. Culp can't help wondering what went wrong. "In the circles I travel in, you don't hear very much," he said. "The thing about Mossy shocked everybody.

But Mike was a bigger shock. I guess if you had to guess which one would go wrong, it would have been Mossy. "Mike was always the quiet one, real polite. Mossy was more aggressive and outgoing. You know, you have to wonder who looks out for these guys when they go off to college.

"It's disappointing. And it's sad." But there was such a community uproar that then-General Manager Mike Lynn decided to release the former cornerback. It has been one rejection after another since then. Suspended or banned? Upon his release, Cade met with then-NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle about rejoining the game in March 1989.

That summer, Rozelle denied the request, suspending Cade for the 1989 season with the right to petition the league for readmission. "When I got out I knew the league would impose sanctions on me," Cade said. "I'm like everybody else. I'm a human being and we all make mistakes. "I respect the league.

I know they have to uphold the integrity of the league, but they've let a lot of other people into the league who shouldn't be there."
