CJ The Afion BrpuMlf Turly, Murch 3, IW4 ON THE AIR DeShields watching his mother grow up No big deal? Bulls' Pippen rips brass for not acting 3 Dellno DeShleldt was born to a mother who was 15 and a father who was 1 8. They never married. His grandmother, Elizabeth, reared him. They had food on the table and After simmering for few days, Scotti Pippen boiled over about the Chicago Bulls' failure to male a trade last week, which has led to fhe All-Star forward being switched to guard. "I'm very disappointed because I don't feel like management has given us an opportunity to win a fourth title." clothes on their backs.

They had love, they just didn't have any money. Wilton, his father, was never really there for him, but DeShields said he respected him anyway. His mother, Debbie, tried to be there for him, but that surprised at what Delino will do," said Dodgers third baseman Tim Wallach, a teammate of DeShields in his first three Expos seasons. "People think he's quiet, but he's such a competitor and he's so tough, he wants to win. He's a very mature guy for his age, and he's gotten better every season." But far from the baseball field, DeShields' mother turned 41 last Saturday.

She has gone back to school and recently earned her Associate of Arts degree. She plans to go on for a bachelor's degree in human resources. On her birthday, she talked about the past, hesitantly but honestly. DeShields remembered what effect it had on his mother the first time he told the story of his upbringing. "When I first came up to the big leagues and told my story, it was very difficult for her," he said.

"But she is getting stronger now, and it's getting better. She told me she talked about it again and she still feels uncomfortable. But I told her that all of that is in the past; it's OK now. We are moving forward." school, he watched his mother disappear in an alcoholic haze. That, Debbie now says, forced her son to grow up auickly, far sooner than any 12-ycar-oid should have to.

"1 had a problem with alcohol, and Deliuo had a lot of decisions to make at a young age," she said, adding that she has not had a drink in four years. "My alcoholism made him grow up. My not being there for him made him dig deeper within himself. "You wish you could change things in the past, but some things you can't. In the last four years, we have started a whole new relationship and we are very close.

"Delino is always saying to me, i had a hard time raising you, The Los Angeles Dodgers are expecting greatness from DeShields, a second baseman they acquired from Montreal by trading pitcher Pedro Martinez. DeShields has averaged 46 stolen bases, 144 hits and 77 runs scored in his four seasons with the Expos. "I think people are going to be EOS COIiS The Arizona Republic KTAR's bid for ASU isn't a sure thing Dellno DeShields Pippen said. I don't care hat we had to do. Why didn't we go after (Danny) Manning and then lose him (as a free agent after the season), do something because of the position we're in.

"And who didn't always work out, either. "They had me when they were young," DeShields told Maryann Hudson of the las Angeles Times, "and they had a lot of living to do. I tell them that we can't really make up for lost time, we just have to go on from here and make the most of it." When DeShields was in junior high Scottl Pippen Bids are due today for the Arizona State radio contract. And the decision, expected to be made April 1, will have huge implications. The main intrigue involves KTAR radio (620 AM), which has broadcast ASU football, basketball and baseball exclusively since 1982.

"For a change, it appears we're going to have some competition, and it's a nice thing to have," said Sports Information Director Marie Brand, who recently was named ASU's radio and television liaison. In the past, KTAR's bids for the Sun Devils have gone unchallenged. But this time, at least three other stations KOY (550 AM), KNNS (1360 AM) and KEZ (99.9 FM) are known to be interested in SPORTS TAKES EDITOR JffCad Compiled from Republic sports wires and staff sources. Why couldn't we say we'd go out and get who we needed. It's going to be much harder to win." Pippen said he talked to General Manager Jerry Krause before the trading deadline and suggested deals, including one involving Clippers guard Ron Harper. But he said he got no response and then was baffled as the Bulls let Philadelphia's Jeff Hornacek go to Utah for a declining Jeff Malone. Word out of Philadelphia was that the Bulls never made a serious offer. "It's discouraging because come the end of the season, I know more is going to be asked of me." New place, new crowd The Cleveland Indians already have sold more than 1.7 million tickets for their new downtown jewel of a ballpark.

That by itself would be the fifth-best attendance figure in club history. And with a month to go until Opening Day, many group sales still to be made and the Indians likely to be a contender, the club expects to approach 3 million in attendance. Meanwhile, in Arlington, Texas, the Rangers expect to reach a team record 2.8 million in attendance thanks to their new ballpark. As for Baltimore, Year 3 of Oriole Park at Camden Yards finds the team projecting its season attendance at 3.7 million, which means it expects to sell out virtually all 81 home dates. No wonder so many owners dream about having a new ballpark.

of Jefferson City, which recently won the University of Arizona radio rights. KTAR is believed to be willing to do almost anything to keep ASU. The station has firm control of the Suns, but recently lost the Cardinals to KEZ. Losing ASU would tarnish its image even more. ASU knows this.

Its bargaining position was enhanced greatly when the Cardinals left KTAR. ASU put out a 50-page Request for Proposal, detailing what it expects from the station that get the rights. Included are Such items as pre- and post-game shows, coaches shows and promotions. Besides Strawberry, the investigation by the IRS and the U.S. Attorney's Office in White Plains, N.Y., includes Howard Johnson, Lenny Dyk-stra and Eric Davis, but the Daily News quoted sources as saying Strawberry is the only player known to be facing criminal charges. None of the players could be reached for comment, the newspaper said. The Daily News said Strawberry has hired a Los Angeles tax attorney to work out a possible plea-bargain agreement.

HORSE RACING Turf Paradise, 1 p.m. The PGA Tournament Policy has authorized the development of a Ryder Cup-type international event, tentatively titled The President's Cup, PGA Tour Deputy Commissioner Tim Finchem announced. "If possible, we will have the inaugural event this year," Finchem said. "If TODAY'S TELEVISION TENNIS Newsweek Cup ESPN GOLF Doral Ryder Open USA 2 p.m. other sports will be part ot the package.

"We are very open-minded this time," Brand said. "We realize the market has changed. We realize the landscape has changed, with a new rights-holder for the NFL. We are very anxious to see what comes in." Part of the changing landscape also involves the presence of an all-sports station, KNNS (SportsRadio 1360). The station is expected to make a serious bid.

Plans are in the works for new call letters and a new position on the dial, resulting in a stronger signal. KEZ would replace KTAR as the primary source for local sports if it got the ASU package, but it might be interested in going after football solely. ASU and KTAR have had an uneasy relationship because of conflicts between Suns and Sun Devils basketball games. The Suns have priority on KTAR. When conflicts arise, as they often have, ASU games are bumped to another station.

In recent years, the games have been shipped to KXEG (1010 AM), a low-power station. ASU has not been happy with that. KTAR and ASU reportedly could have extended the current contract if arrangements had been made to put basketball games on a better station, but that never was done. Brand said money won't be the only consideration. "We're looking for the best possible package we can get," Brand said.

"That includes, obviously, dollars, but also a better signal for basketball, a better situation. Promotion and whatever else we can get in that area. More exposure for other sports that don't get them." Don't let the facts interfere It would help the credibility of SportsRadio 1360 to avoid the type of goofs that recently plagued its broadcasts. On the day of the NBA trading deadline last week, Arnie Spanier reported as news not as rumor or trade talk that Jeff Hornacek would be shipped to Chicago and Danny Manning would go to to Orlando. Neither happened.

Hornacek went to Utah and Manning to Atlanta. Then this week, the Sports Nuts said an upcoming Cardinals news conference would announce the signing of free agents Seth Joyner and Sean Jones. Also wrong. The two were simply in town to talk to the club. "It is not our policy to share inaccurate information, and I hope everyone on the air recognizes a responsibility to be as thorough as possible," station General Manager Kathy Lawrence said.

Cubs exhibitions Coolidge-based KCKY radio (11 50 AM), Arizona's original all-sports station, again will broadcast all Chicago Cubs exhibition games. Where will the Nancy Kerrigan assault case be prosecuted, Portland or Detroit? That question has gained new significance with a report that Oregon authorities want the case moved to Michigan and Detroit prosecutors say it should stay in Oregon. Norm Frink, the Multnomah chief deputy district attorney, would not confirm such a dispute exists, but repeated that discussions continue and no decision has been made on where any further charges will be filed.
