Friday, February 14, 1992 The Arizona Republic D13 'Wayne's World' is excellent fun MOVIE REVIEW J- tltlUiiiJ.r' I 111 rl t' tJT- 'Vi WAYNE'S WORLD Director: Penelope Spheeris. Cast: Mike Myers, Dana Carvey, Rob Lowe, Tia Carrere. Rated PO-13. Masterpiece Terrific Good So-So it-it Stinker By Bob Fentter Tha Arizona Republic Wayne World is a sociological dissertation on the post-adolescent, pre-cxistential, psychodynamic polemics of popular culture. Not.

Wayne's World is a ton of fun for people who are younger than 30 or who think they are. If you're not a Wayne's World fan from Saturday Night Live, you might want to skip this movie entirely or you may get the idea that you're one of the people they're making fun of. If you haven't seen this routine on Saturday Night Live but arc determined to catch up, Wayne's World is a cable-access TV show broadcast from the basement of Wayne's parents' home. Wayne (Mike Myers) and his buddy Garth (Dana Carvey) are heavy-metal headbangers who spend their TV show and their lives making slick-talking TV executive (Rob Lowe) who wants to put their show on the network and actually pay them money for it. Is prime time ready for Wayne's World? Will Wayne and Garth sell out? Do they actually have anything to sell, ami is anyone buying? While the boys try to cope with success, Wayne also has to win the heart of Cassandra (Tia Carrere), the voluptuous, heavy-metal karate star of his dreams.

How did the Saturday Night Live crew manage to turn a three-minute TV skit into a funny, full-length movie? By piling on one silly scene after another. The story is a lot of nonsense, and the nonsense is fun. The movie is a collection of sight gags, slapstick, music spoofs and goofy commentaries on suburban life by Wayne and Garth. Watching Wayne's World is like spending an hour in a roomful of class clowns. The flick is packaged to make teen-agers feel they've got a world of their own.

Wayne is the cool guy every kid wants to be, while Garth is the dweeb every kid hopes no one else thinks he is. Wayne's World has fun cameos from people like Brian Doyle-Murray, Lara Flynn Boyle, Meat Loaf and Arizona's own Alice Cooper. There are also a couple of great surprises for movie lovers, but I'm not going to give them away. If you're not a Wayne's World type, you may think the movie is stupid. But if you are into Wayne's World, you'll realize that's the point.

The only thing really off about Wayne's World is the rating. How they got a PG-13 with all the near-nudity, semi-sex and endless smutty jokes is beyond me. It should have been rated R. If you send the kids, be prepared to have them come home telling dirty stories about what they saw. I fun of everything adult.

The only things they take seriously are pop culture and babes. The movie has plenty of both. Wayne and Garth are happily living their low-rent life in Aurora, although Wayne would like to find a job that doesn't involve hairnets and name tags, and Garth dreams of finding the courage to talk to the doughnut-shop girl of his dreams.
