AT: ADULTS CHILDREN 35c Walt Disney presents 3 -EL PASO HERALD-POST, Monday, June 24, 1963 The Show Case Production of 'Hamlet' Sparkles at Texas Western By JOAN QUARM "Hamlet's" extended run, at Texas Western College Magoffin Auditorium through Tuesday at 8 p.m., is well-merited. Director Donald Brady has created a producremarkable and spirit, and truly original. His vast, lowering set, on levels, like a blue cliff or grayblack castle, dominates the action of a tragedy often called the Quarm Quarm world's greatest. Here is a place where only evil can befall, where characters run together, impelled by shock, as Ophelia and Polonio us run to speak of Hamlet's madness, or apart, as the prince runs from false friends, or up and down ramparts, in anguish, as in the ghost scene; or march stiffly like puppets of the royal court.

It is a place of strange lights and sounds: a place of fear and "HAMLET" has been presented so often throughout the four centuries of the play's existence, that only such originality as Don Brady's can save it from the over-familiarity of much Ition. Knowing that I must leave town before opening, I questioned the director closely his plans and problems, studied his designs and blocking, and was impressed by both. Problems include the length of the script, which is the second longest by Shakespeare, longest of the tragedies, and yet so tightly woven that each line has value, and all cuts are to be deplored. The poetry itself is also a difficulty to modern actors. None of the Marlon Brando school of mutterness can do well here, and one of the present cast drilled for eight hours in order to deliver an eight-line speech correctly "trippingly upon the tongue." Involved sentence structures, inversions and archaic words all have to be mastered and made easy for the audience to understand, and very few local actors have had previous experience with Shakespeare's work, due to the very difficulties which make such experience essential.

AGAIN, MR. BRADY pointed a out it that the Bard has suffered in America from poor productions by high schools and amateur groups, "dully and unimaginatively drilled" as culture, (until students learned to hate both.) by unimaginative uneducated E.P.
