The firm had been started by Bill Graves and his father in 1935 dong a farm-to-market trucking business with a ton and a half truck. Upon the death of the father, five years later, Bill Graves took over the responsibility of the business and began enlarging it. His brothers, John, Jim and Dwight were brought into the company and four today operate a firm doing several million dollars business a year. The company terminal in Hays employs 15 men, has a fleet of trucks in operation and has a payroll of $10,000 a month. District supervisor here is Bob Nelson, who has had 11 years experience and has lived in Hays a year; terminal manager is Jack Shade who has been in the business since it was owned by Pete Felten, his service having begun in 1941 and Adolph Hammerschmidt, office manager, who has been in the business 12 The Graves brothers purchased the Felten Truck Line from Pete Felten two years ago.

Felten had operated the business since 1929 and made it one of the major hauling services in the state. Upon the sale of the business he retired and the Graves brothers started an expansion program which resulted in the building of three new terminals in the last two years. The largest at Kansas City, cost the second, at Wichita, cost $150,000 and the third at Salina was builftat a cost of $100,000. Other terminals are at Hays, Topeka, Hutchinson, and Manhattan, but the company serves a territory which extends, in the state, from Kansas City on the east to Colby and Oakley on the west to Hill City on the north and Dodge City and Wichita on the west. All cities be- tween these boundaries are also served by the company.

Service is also provided to and from all points in the United States and Canada through inter-line carriers. There are 325 employees of the company which operates 320 trucks and trailers and has a payroll of $38,000 weekly. Bill Graves, company president, and John Graves, vice-president, live at Salina; Dwight Graves, secretary-treasurer of the company, lives at Wichita, and Jim Graves, resident agent of the company, lives at Kansas City.
