Pettie, Canada; who had broken thur, and flyweight, Bertram Harris, seem to be in a class other countries. It was decided to allow Pettle to take his place In the field, provided the other competitors agreed. This announcement brought roars of approval from tbe tr ft (r 7 Ta "--k CHOPPY WATERS ON THE BAY and a stiff breeie added zest to yachting at the Royal St.

Kilda Yacht Club's regatta. Mtjht Trotting Questioning of Three Drivers By Raider Three drivers at the trotting oh Saturday night will be questioned today on the performances of their horses in the Douglas Handicap. He had been resDonslble for two of three false starts. Wltn the crowd roarina its disapproval of the starter's action, omciais Began a lone discussion which ended 60 1 minutes later with Pettle being allowed to start. As Fettle argued with om ciais, and the jury of appeal was convened, the other run ners donned track suits and; sat on the Brass.

Because the ieeiinK ox tne crowd was so obviously with tne Canadian, an announce ment was made over the loud1 speakers: "The decision of the referee in all amateur sport is nnai. After a delay or 50 minutes, an announcement was made that the jury had upheld the Judge's decision in disqualifying Pettle from the final. The connections of Dornrv.ii have made no secret that they are dissatisfied with Dornoch's weignt in me Dig sprint races in Melbourne. "He Is brilliant for three or four furlongs, but he is no champion," said Bon Hoysted. Dornoch won the Chelsea Handicap by two lengths on Saturday, but indicated be li not at his best at Moonee Valley. At his previous start at Moonee Valley he was beaten Into third place by Lalmell and One Up.

HEROIC. Withers Fastest in 3-Mile Swim Barry Withers, 18-year-old State backstroke champion. made fastest time In the Victorian Amateur Swimming Association's three-mile Yarra swim on Saturday. his time was 1 hour I minute 19 seconds. He was on scratch, 23 minutes behind the limit man in a field of 75.

Joe Gill (South Melbourne). 70-year-old veteran of the annual swim between Fairfield and Studley Park, unsuccessfully made his 26th bid to will the race. The swim was staeed In strong current, which followed recent heavy rains. Cycle Double to Bonneys A unlaue double In cycling history was' completed when young Richmond rider Byron Bonney brilliantly won the 43rd annual Austral wneei race on Saturday night. This win, and that of his brother, Stan Bonney, in the 1949 Warrnambool road race, makes the Bonney family the only one to win the two events in a season.

Both competed in the Austral and won their heats, thus qualifying for the final. From 120 yards Byron was on a mark 40 yards behind nil brother, but was greatly helped by pacing assistance from him in the later stages of the race. At the finish Bonney maintained a half length advantage over John Taggart (Coburg), off 140 yards. Les Teasdale (Coburg) was a similar distance away third. First prize was 100, second 25 and third 10.

Two of the scratchmen In the race, Carl Koblauch and Dean Whltehorn, were forced from their heats with mechanical trouble. Bill Guyatt, Australian professional champion, found nil handicap of 150 yards too great. Later, Guyatt easily won the Aces five-mile scratch race. A speedy break from the field with three laps to go, gave amateur rider H. J.

Shaw a narrow win in the amateur five miles scratch racej 28,000 at Races The attendance at the Melbourne Racing Club's meeting at Moonee Valley on Saturday was 28,000, and the totalisator aggregate 104,076 10. D. Parker. I hostile demonstration. The previous week Claude Derby, In a slowly run race, finished uura over 14 luriongs, alter starting a o4 on favorite. Great Effort Claude Derby was on the outside of Congo Song for most of the final stages of the race, and to win under these circumstances was a great per iormance.

Honors of the race were with Amorous, who was never out of trouble, but came home strongly from well back to be second, iour yards Demna. silver I'eaK snowed Dy nis excellent third that he is nearlng the form which made him the idol of Melbourne crowds over the last two seasons. A protest by K. Ritchie, dri ver of Gil Don, who finished second in the Haves Open Stakes, against the winner, First Dixie (N. Allen), for interference in the home stretch was upheld and the placlngs reversed.

The stewards then suspended the driving licence of N. Allen for a month for careless driving. An inquiry will De neid today into the cause of tne cnecK which Commercial Lady re ceived In the back straight in the second Mansneid r'ree-ior-AU. Larwood to Settle Here LONDON, Feb. 5 (A.A.P.).

Harold Larwood, former Notts and England fast bowler, wilt migrate to Australia, where his bodyline bowling caused such controversy. Passages have been booked for himself, his wife and children, and they sail on April 27. Mrs. Larwood said they had no prospects in mind nor had they any ideas what they would do. "We don't even know what part of the country we shall stay In," she said.

Umpires Find Creases Wrong Umpires In the Sub-District nrsts match at Brunswick on Saturday discovered the width of the bowling crease at each end of the wicket was eight mcnes snort. The result Is that Brunswick may be fined by the Sub- District Cricket Association because the start of the game was delayed 15 minutes while the lines were remarked. The umpires, E. Ounston ana O. Barrenger, noticed the fault as Brunswick batsmen and Ivanhoe fieldsmen were walking on to the ground.

The umpires measured ana found the distance from centre stump to the end ot tne Downng crease was oniy four feet on either side, in stead- of the regulation 4 ft. 4 in. They will make a report to uie general meeting oi tne association on SYDNEY, Sunday. Weights for the Doncaster Handicap and Sydney Cup, announced tonight, are: DONCASTER, One mile, April 8. The previous week he had won over 11 furlongs In fast time, but failed to get away well on Saturday night arid trailed the field. The stewards ordered that G. Rothacker, who scored wltn Bruce War, must in future drive this horse when available. Rothacker skilfully got the gelding, who is a bad breaker, back into stride each time he made a mistake, and this won the race for mm. Avian Derby, the 64 on fa vorlte bolted around the track alter ne leu a lurioxig iruui home in the first Mansfield Free-for-All.

Three horses Avian Derby (S. Bray), Black Towrang (G. Rothacker) and Recovered (H. Mazoudier) all fell, but the drivers escaped serious injury. The stewards opened an ln- auirv into the smash, and, after questioning several drivers, adjourned proceedings until today.

The race was won by High- field, who started at 21 and led all the way. ine drivers oi Miraculous (B. Coram, Jun.) and Jacky Ranj (R. Shaw) were unseated from their sulkies. Only five: oi tne 13 horses were shown on the official time sheets as having completed the course.

Too Many Starters In my ODlnlon. 14 nacers are too many or 1 free-for-all on a small track such as the Melbourne show grounds, and there is vital need for a competent horseman to catch horses that become terrified and bolt after a smash. Even if Avian Derbv had not come to grief, I do not think tnat ne would have won, as mgnnem naa a powenui finishing run left. He averaged the fast rate of 2.11 1-5 for the 12 furlongs and a half. Byrald.

a well-nerformed Tasmanian horse, came home strongly to take second prize. This form will give him a strong chance in the championship. The grey New Zealand Sprayman, did well to finish third. He has had a lot. of travelling recently, and fori nis nrsc run- nere this was a good effort.
