By Suzanne Lopez -The Arizona Republic Andrew J. Womack of Phoenix, founder of Andy Womack Building and a nationally known rodeo 'cjown, has died of cancer.

He was 85 when he died Wednesday. Mr. Womack was born in Tennessee on Jan. 10, 1907. His family moved to Arizona the next year.

His involvement in building began when he got a job working on Hoover Dam on the Colorado River. By the 1930s, Mr. Womack had perfected techniques in constructing mass-produced homes and pioneered Ae process in the Valley. He also built several hotels, including the Stardust Hotel in Yuma and the Flamingo Hotel in Flagstaff. Mr.

Womack also was known for his performances as a rodeo clown, which included appearances at Madi son Square Garden in New York City and at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. Many of his rodeo-clown acts were performed with Slim Pickens and Gene Autry. His clown act attracted attention, and he had several movie appearances, including Bus Stop, with Marilyn Monroe, and Stay Away, Joe, with Elvis Presley. Mr. Womack was one of the founding members of the Phoenix Junior Chamber of and served three terms as chairman of the Phoenix Jaycees Rodeo of Rodeos.

In his honor, the Jaycees present the Andy Womack Award each year to the individual or business that best promotes the rodeo and the city. Mr. Womack performed his last clown act in 1991 at the Old Timers Rodeo at the Arizona Livestock Show in Phoenix. Survivors include his former wife, Maureen his daughters, Karen Void, Judith Tanner, Pamela Barton, Suzanne Hammer and Cynthia; his sons, William Frank, Timothy Andrew and Mark David; his sisters, Lucille Taylor and Virginia Beebe; his brother, Richard; 20 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 11 a.m.
