Mass: 1 p.m. Monday, StJoachim St. Anne Catholic Church, 11625 N.lllth Ave. 3 -A Li DEATH, from pajeJM Heistand sad. The church leaders, who are members of the Bishops and Executives Round Table, said they chose Friday to hold a news conference because it was the date that Donald Eugene Harding originally was scheduled to die in the gas chamber.

The Arizona Supreme Court has delayed the execution for three months to consider arguments that Harding, who was sentenced to death for three 1980 murders, should not be killed because he is brain damaged. The execution would have been the first in the state since 1963. The denominations represented at Friday's news conference were Episcopal, Roman Catholic, Evangelical Lutheran, Presbyterian, Religious Society of Friends, United Church of Christ, Disciples of Christ and Unitar-ian-Universalist Heistand and the other clergy members acknowledge that polls indicate that most people favor the death penalty and that the clerics' stand probably will be unpopular. But Bishop Thomas O'Brien of the Catholic Diocese of Phoenix said, "We need an education process to show what's more just. It's important we help people understand the full concept of reconciliation and forgiveness." Bishop Howard Wennes of the Grand Canyon Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America agreed.

"We're calling Arizona to a higher ground," Wennes said. The group's statement says that there should be "appropriate punishment" for criminals, but added that "to succumb to the retaliatory violence of capital punishment is abdicating our responsibility as Christians and as human beings." "We pray, too, that society will find more effective ways to serve the victims of crime and their families, offering them assistance to recover as completely as possible from the harm they have suffered," the statement says; Defector sons meet for the 1st time DEFECTOR, from pageBl sued a French Communist newspaper that had denounced his book. But he knew nothing of. Andrew and Anthony. The half brothers were brought together after Literaturnaya Gazyeta, a Soviet publication, published an article about their father in 1990.

Andrew said he contacted the publication at the urging of Stephen Cohen, director of Russian studies at Princeton University in New Jersey, who had told him about the article. Several weeks later, he said, he was contacted by a Literaturnaya Gazyeta editor who told him of Valentin's existence. Valentin said he spent much of his life believing he was the son of a traitor. He even changed his name and left his home and his wife in Ukraine to escape persecution, he said. "All of my life, I have lived with a broken heart," he said.

"The communists taught me to hate my father as an enemy of Stalin. "But when I saw Andrew, that part of my heart was returned, that part that was broken." Valentin marveled at the cheese, milk and cream that were served to him on the flight from New York to Phoenix, saying there is no milk, even for children, in Ukraine. "The shelves are empty there is nothing to eat," he said. ,1 Andrew said he and Valentin will go to his ranch northwest of Phoenix and spend time getting to know each other and learning to speak each other's language. Then, he said, they will embark upon "an incredible quest." In addition to clearing their father's name and proving he was murdered, Andrew said they also would like to carry out his wishes by scattering his ashes over the Dnieper River in Ukraine.

His father's ashes, along with those of his brother and their mother, are at a borne on the Easft Coast, he said, declining to be more specific.
