Burns Creek Wins Nod In Senate By Frank Hewlett Tribune Washington Bureau WASHINGTON, July 24 The proposed 45 million dollar Burns Creek project on the Snake River in Idaho's Bonneville County won Senate approval Friday, following a spirited two-hour debate in which the only opposition came from the Republicans, THE SENATE'S action was by a voice vote. The biil now goes to the House, where stronger opposition appears likely. In past session, the Senate also ap proved Burns Creek but the legislation died in the House. Spearheading thfe opposition were Republicans Sens. Barry Goldwater Arizona and Wailace F.

Bennett of Utah. Joining them in speaking against the measure were GOP Sens. Everett Dirksen of Illinois, Hugh Scott of Pennsylvania and Kenneth Keating of New York. CHAMPIONING the legislation were Sens. Frank Church, Idaho Democrat; Henry C.

Dworshak, Idaho Republican and sponsor of the bill, and Clinton P. Anderson, chairman of the Irrigation and Reclamation Subcommittee. Most vocal of the opponents was Sen. Goldvvaler who insisted Burns Creek was strictly a public power project and "departing in a dangerous way from the usual reclamation concept." HE SAID UTAH Power Light Co. was ready to build a coal-steam plant which would more- than take care of the area's power needs and that congressional approval of Burns Creek would amount to "one more step down the dirty road to socialism." The Arizonan contended he was a long-time friend of western reclamation and didn't want "under the clean robes of reclamation 10 be hidden The Like Tribune, Saturday, July 25, 1959 Intermountain Obituaries Mrs.

CHURCH in one of his longest speeches of the session, insisted Burns Creek was a true reclamation project and one that was needed badiy by the Upper Snake River Basin; He said that while the water storage was small compared to the nearby Palisades project. the water already had been oversubscribed by the users in the area.
