for the afternoon. Though the occasion was the final day of the Victorian championships, the America versus Australia atmosphere submerged everythinr else. In the final of the men's singles several puzzling decisions by the umpire and mls-ialllng of the scores unsettled the players. On one occasion a member of the crowd called "out" when a return by Bromwlch hit the base line. The umpire ordered a "let'' ball to be played, but the incident upset the players.

The first set of tho Budge-Bromwich encounter finished 8-6 in favor of the former, and provided an eloquent foretaste of good things to come.
