D6 The Arizona Republic Tuesday, June 22, 1993 GAME 6: ran cniPiLLiTi Bulls Suns 09 98 Bulls can look back with pride In Friday's Game 2 of the Bulls-Suns series, Chicago's Michael Jordan (-f 15.8 points) graded out as the best player, closely followed by Phoenix's Charles Barkley 1 3.6). Chicago's B.J. Armstrong and Phoenix's Danny Ainge tied for the top defensive rating 2.0). In a two-game series summary, Jordan rates as the top overall player, at 12.0, with Barkley next at 8. 1 In each team's chart below, the first line for each player represents Game while the second line is each player's series average.

The Complete Box Score is a concept designed to measure the defensive and overall performance of a basketball player, as developed by NBA draft consultant Rich Steinlauf. Using videotape and computerization, Steinlauf evaluates all 10 players on the floor to reach the final ratings. A player rating of zero is considered average. Players who played well get plus ratings, while players who played poorly get minuses. The combined player rating for the entire team will add up to the margin of victory or defeat in that game.

Magic accomplished something I've never done in winning five championships, but to win three in a row is something he has never done." Jordan said this was the most difficult title of the three because the Bulls were a marked team, and because he was a marked man on and off the court. "It was harder than anything I've ever done before in basketball with all the ups and downs that I've gone through this season and the mental approach that I've had to take in each game," Jordan said. "We never gave up hope, and now that this team has become part of history, it's a very gratifying feeling for me." The Bulls' 7-2 road record in the playoffs, including 3-0 against the Suns, was the key.

They are only the second team that did not open with the home-court advantage to win the Finals since the 2-3-2 travel format was adopted in the early 1980s. The difference in the Finals was that the Bulls executed like champions when games were on the line. In Game 6, the Bulls held the Suns scoreless three times in the final minute while scoring five points to overcome a four-point deficit, keyed by Paxson's big shot. In Game 4, the Bulls twice knocked the ball out of bounds when the Suns had it in the final 40 seconds. On the Suns' final inbound play, B.J.

Armstrong of the Bulls came up with the ball. In Game 2, Pippen blocked a three-point attempt by Danny Ainge that could have tied the score with 28 seconds left. That's how close to disaster the Bulls came in this series. Yet like the champions they are, they prevailed. "We're a team that has come to terms with specific roles that each player has to play for us," Jackson said.

"The players realize that there are times when they'll have to stand back and let Michael take over a game." Jordan scored nine of the Bulls' final 12 points after they were blanked for the first 6:09 of the fourth quarter Sunday. "Ten years from now when my kids are grown, I'll look back on winning three straight, and I'll have, a proud smile on my face," Jordan said. BULLS, from page Dl rings. Do the Bulls now belong in a class with the great Lakers Minneaplis and Los Angeles who won 1 1 titles, and the Boston Celtics, who won 16? Jhe Celtics of the 1950s and 60s won more consecutive titles eight than the Bulls have so far. They had one of the game's all-time greats, center Bill Russell, and a strong supporting cast.

But the league was considerably weaker from top to bottom in those days and the playoff road was much shorter. How many in succession would those Celtics have won in this era? Would these Bulls also have won eight straight, or more, in that era? Bulls Coach Phil Jackson, whose .743 playoff winning percentage is the highest of all-time, said a case can be made. "Back in the 1950s and '60s, there were only two rounds in the playoffs," Jackson said. "Then in the '70s, there were three. Now there are four." The playoffs, for those teams lasting until the Finals, has become the equivalent of a fifth quarter to the 82-game regular-season grind.

The Bulls played 19 playoff games, the Suns 24. "It's almost summertime. There's a six-week playoff period now," Jackson said. "That requires great sustaining effort, and that has to be considered when assessing what this team has accomplished." Between 1980 and 1991, the Lakers reached the Finals nine times, winning five with Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and James Worthy leading the way. They repeated in 1987 and 1988, but failed in their bid for a three-peat in 1989.

Between 1981 and 1987, the Celtics reached the Finals five times, winning three none back-to-back with Larry Bird. While the Bulls might not be the strongest or most dominating team of all-time, they have to be the team with the most resiliency, the most perseverance, thanks to the superhuman drive of Michael Jordan. "It really hasn't been hear of in today's basketball with the parity and competitiveness within the league now," Jordan said of the three-peat. "I think we're all aware of that." Jordan certainly was. He knows some doubt that he belongs in the same stratosphere as Magic and Bird.
