Tell Symptoms And Dangers Off Glaucoma Glaucoma, the sneak thief of sight, is responsible for of all blindness, is estimated that 24,000 lowans have glaucoma and only one-half of them are aware of it, states Mrs. Arlene Ingles, R.N., Allamakee County Public Health Nurse.

Mrs. Arlene Ingles also states that glaucoma can be medically treated to halt its progress if an early diagnosis is made. However, sight destroyed by glaucoma cannot be restored. Glaucoma is not contagious; it is not a form of cancer and cannot be made worse by using the eyes (reading, playing cards, sewing). Glaucoma is caused by pressure inside the eye.

The front portion of the eye contains a circulating fluid (aqueous humor) which is constantly being drained off. With glaucoma this drainage becomes inpaired and pressure increases within the eye. This increased pressure becomes dangerous to the retina (back wall) of the eye. The retina has many tiny nerve cells that connect to nerve fibers and blood vessels. This pressure can destroy these nerve cells and fibers by reducing their blood supply.

Each time a nerve cell and fiber are destroyed a certain amount of sight is permanently lost. The following are some signs and symptoms that can suggest glaucoma. (But remember, glaucoma is like high blood pressure, symptoms are not necessary to have the disease.) Glasses, even new ones, don't help. Blurred or hazy vision even if it clears up after awhile. Trouble in adjusting to darkened rooms like theatres.

Seeing rainbow-colored rings around lights. Your field of vision is reduced at the sides of one or both eyes. Difficulty in focusing on close work. These symptoms may indicate glaucoma. However, they also may indicate other eye problems.

The only way to be sure is to check with your eye doctor. Mrs. Arlene Ingles advises that the best protection against glaucoma is a regular checkup that includes a tonometry test. These checkups should be every two years for persons over 40 years of age and every one year for persons over 35 with a family history of glaucoma.
