Mfrttl! August 1 at. laht. Venezuela, streets is in the works. "My own personal feeling is you'll never see a race in Venezuela," Sheron said. Tough sentence Belgian racer Bertrand Gachot, who drives for the Jordan Formula One team, was given a $850 fine and handed an 18-month prison sentence last week in London for spraying a taxi driver with a canister of tear gas in December.

Tear gas is forbidden in the United Kingdom. The incident stemmed from an argument with the cabbie, who apparently didn't like the way Gachot drove a Formula One race car. Gachot, who said he thought he was going to be attacked by the taxi driver, took out a can of tear gas and sprayed him in the face. Gachot will remain in prison until Sept. 19, when his appeal is scheduled to be heard.

Handle with care Formula One official insists race will return By Mark Armljo The Arizona Republic For what seems like the umpteenth time in the three-year history of the Iceberg Phoenix Grand Prix, rumors are circulating that the Formula One race has been held on downtown city streets for the last time. Although there are two years remaining on the five-year contract, trade magazines in Europe and the United States have printed schedules that exclude the Phoenix stop from the 1992 Formula One racing calendar. "We've heard those rumors, too," said Jerry Gciger, deputy director of community and economic development for Phoenix. "We weren't really concerned about it, but when you hear things flying around like that, it was almost like we needed an air of confidence." "I'm not going to worm my way in because I wouldn't want that done to me. Please emphasize that. "In fact, I think since Bernie already has a deal with Phoenix, he should let the deal run its course. If at the end of that five years Bernie wants to go somewhere else, yes, I certainly would want to be factored into Formula One's plans." Although his interests are high in Formula One, Sheron said he knew last week the rumors were unfounded. "I had dinner with Bernie last week in London and asked him about those schedules coming out in magazines," Sheron said.

"He said they were nonsense." More F-l It isn't official, but it appears the South Africa Grand Prix will be added to next year's schedule. If the venue is added, it likely will replace the Hungary Grand Prix, which reportedly is off the 1992 schedule. i The Associated Press DENVER Bobby Rahal was the quickest qualifier Friday, taking the provisional pole for Sunday's Texaco- Havoline Grand Prix on the tight downtown street circuit. Rahal's fast lap of 78.747 mph on the 16-turn, 1.9-mile course was just shy of the track qualifying record of 78.964 by Teo Fabi in the inaugural Denver Indy-car race last year. "I suspect (today) we'll have to be quicker yet," said Rahal, whose best starting position this season was fourth, a feat he has accomplished in six of 1 1 events. The final field will be set following another 30 minutes of qualifying today, with all drivers having an opportunity to better their speeds. "1 have to say I was a little surprised," Rahal said of his fast lap.

"It felt good, but it didn't feel that good. The track seemed to be getting faster." Michael Andretti, who trails series-leader Rahal by 24 points in the season standings, was second in the qualifying session, turning a lap of 78.146 mph. Andretti announced earlier in the day that he has signed a one-year contract extension with Newman-Haas Racing. Mario Andretti, Michael's father and teammate who signed a two-year deal Friday to continue with Newman-Haas, was third at 78.122, "Jjr W2T wl. 8 IRONS AND 3 WOODS I Sm SYR.

WARRANTY The city got it Thursday, when Bernie Ecclestone, who heads the Formula One Constructors' Association, faxed a message from his London office. "It said, 'We will be in Phoenix in 1992, Geiger said. City councilman Alan Kennedy wasn't really surprised by the confirmation. "I had spoken with Bernie last week, and one of the things we talked about was the date (March 13-IS) for next year's race," Kennedy said. What seemed to give the latest rumors a dose of credence was the site that supposedly was to replace Phoenix on the schedule: Road Atlanta.

Road Atlanta owner Charles Sheron is friendly with Ecclestone and is a frequent spectator at Formula One races around the world. He has a strong interest in bringing the Formula One race to his 12-turn, 2.52-mile racing facility. But not at the expense of Phoenix. "Sure, I don't deny my interests in Formula One, but I'm not actively pursuing taking the race away from Phoenix," Sheron said on Wednesday. Formula One SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, Belgium Ayrton Senna drove his McLaren Honda to a course record and captured the provisional pole position for the Belgian Grand Prix, a race he has won the past three years. Senna covered the 4.312-mile circuit in 1 minute 49.100 seconds, breaking the course record he set last year. Senna's Austrian teammate Gerhard Berger was second, followed by Nigel Mansell of Britain, Senna's closest rival in the world standings.

Going into Sunday's race, Senna leads the world standings with 61 points. Mansell has 49 and Riccardo Patrese of Italy, 32. Patrese had the sixth best time Friday. Final qualifying is scheduled for today. Senna averaged 142.295 mph during his near-perfect drive.

One thing to remember, however, is Theys hasn't been afforded the best of equipment: a 1-year-old Lola chassis powered by a Cosworth motor. "It's still better than not having a ride at all," said Theys, who will compete in his sixth road-course race this weekend in Denver.

Tentative plans are for Theys to make four more starts for the Indianapolis-based Leader Cards Racing Team. However, there's a catch. "If the car's still in one piece after each race, we'll go on from there," Theys said. "If something breaks or we blow the motors, we won't be going anywhere."
