For an 80-year-old bar, the Pioneer Saloon sure looks its age. -I suppose that's a backhanded compliment, for the Pioneer Saloon in this; rundown mining community is abrjut. as far removed from the glittering casinos and nightclubs- of nearby Las Vegas as pitching pennies isrotn the progressive slots.

the Pioneer is history of a sort: a kind of museum -of booze that has lasted virtually unchanged from the days when Goodsprings was larger than Vegas. Don't expect daiquiris. The Pioneer is strictly a beer-and-shot joint. The thousands of thirsty miners and ranchers who bellied up to its historic, 1860s chcrrywood bar didn't have a taste for fancy drinks. And the Pioneer keeps it that way.

"This is the only saloon for miles around, and most of our customers are just looking for a cold beer," said owner Donald "Papa Don" Hedrick, a bearded, former Hell's Angel who rode up to town one day on his Harley and stayed. Checkered past Goodsprings, about 30 miles southwest of Las Vegas and about 1 5 miles from the California line, has had a checkered past. In 1868, prospectors found several silver-lead deposits in the mountains. They settled near some springs, but later abandoned their claims when the mines showed more lead than silver. One miner, Joe Good, stayed on and lent his name to the springs.

In 1886, a small gold mine was discovered, and 200 people settled in Goodsprings. When a smelting furnace opened in Las Vegas, the lead deposits around Goodsprings became valuable. With other discoveries, Good-springs attracted a narrow-gauge railroad line, and more than 1,000 residents settled in. In 1916, Goodsprings, being bigger and. better known than Las Vegas, hosted the Governor's Ball at its new Goodsprings Hotel.

But Goodsprings and the Pioneer Saloon's real claim to fame stem from the 1942 plane crash that killed movie star Carole Lombard. Lombard, the wife of Clark Gable, was at the height of her popularity when she died while returning to Hollywood after selling war bonds in Indianapolis. The plane crash almost took World War II off the front pages of U.S. newspapers. The plane carrying 22 people, including Lombard's mother, Elizabeth Peters; her MGM press agent, Otto Winkler; and more than a dozen Army Air Corps personnel on leave crashed into a sheer cliff near the top of Mount Potosi.

Gable, hearing about souvenir hunters at the crash site, was enraged and hired a crew to dynamite the cliffs above and bury the wreckage. The effort was not completely successful, and to this day souvenir hunters and the curious climb the dangerous cliffs and occasionally have to be rescued. One relic of the wreck has made it to the Pioneer: A melted chunk of aluminum from the plane sits on the potbellied wood stove in the Pioneer. Framed newspaper stories of the crash are on the walls. The bar hasn't changed much over the years, and Hedrick says he has no intention on altering it.

One of the oldest operating saloons in Nevada, it consists of two rooms the bar and a "party room" with a small bandstand used when the bar has live music. The worn wooden floors are original, and only a pool table, several slot machines and a popcorn machine are modern additions. The building itself is made completely of metal and is said to be the only all-metal saloon in Nevada. Goodsprings, nearly a ghost town of rusting mine machinery, ruins and old, decrepit homes, has a population of about 100, many of whom work in the Gold Strike and Nevada Landing casinos in Jean, about seven miles away. While off the beaten path, the Pioneer Saloon still attracts tourists.

Many have heard about the bar or seen it as a backdrop in movies, TV shows and music videos. If you visit the Pioneer Saloon, order a beer, not a daiquiri.
