lessly spinning fluff into its maw Since the days of the Pharaohs in the Nile cotton harvesting has been the tedious task of millions of human hands The mechanical cotton picker heralds an era in which the farmer will perspire no longer over the problem of ob taining migratory workers at the right time And complete mecha nized production well could be foot in the door to post war cotton markets After 30 years of experimenting the International Harvester Com pany is producing two types of sin gle row pickers one for high cot ton another for low At least two other large farm equipment con cerns are reported ready to man ufacture similar machines 650 Pounds Per Hour One man operates Internation al's machine abd it readily har vests 650 pounds of cotton per hour The average field hand licks about 25 pounds per hour The picker mounted on a tractor which provides power to operate and propel it through the fields In off seasons the tractor is put to other uses The machine has two vertical parallel revolving drums between Which cotton picker moves rows Each drun cam acuated picker bars on which are mounted rotating spindles studded with tinv barbs that catch the lint The rotative speed of the cker drums is synchro nized with the traveling speed of the tractor so that the projecting rotat ng picker spindles enter and withdraw from the plants with out any raking action and with out' disturbing unopened bolls or otherwise injuring the plants As the rotating spindles pene trate the plants and contact the lint in the open bolls the barbs extract the cotton fers which rotate in imity to the spindles cotton Before the spindles open bolls they pass mois tened rubber pads which moisten the spindles to assist in doffing the cotton A water tank and me tering system supplies water to the rubber pads Vacuum Cleaned The cotton is conveyed by vac uum to a separating chamber where considerable trash is taken out It is then blown up into the stor age basket by air pressure passing along a grating which further sifts out trash The basket holds ap proximately one half bale of seed cotton: when filled it is dumped by a hydraulic lift The picker has been tested in Mississippi Texas Arkansas Louisiana and California A ma jor criticism is that it gets some green leaves mixed with the lint and these provide trash difficult for ordinary gin equipment to re move Gins with special driers handle this problem There are wartime restrictions on the manufacture of driers however and in Texas only about 20 per cent of gins are so equipped In three yeaf tests conducted at the Hopson Plantation Clarksdale Miss the average total cost of ma chine picking a bale of cotton was found to be $583 as compared with $3214 for hand picking The average hand picked bale was of higher grade and was val ued at $8641 The machine pick ed bale brought $7612 Net sav ing on a mechanically harvested bale was $1602 In many cases plants are de foliated with chemicals before cot ton is harvested mechanically Ma chines or planes dust the fields about 40 days after the last white blooms of the cotton plants drop on Leaves soon blacken and leaving only cotton bolls on stalk Chemical Defoliation Defoliation has not proven cessful everywhere lough Texas A agronomist observed proper degree of dew and humidity is necessary before cyn amid dust will destroy cell growth and cause the leaves to wither and drop Without these condi tions leaves will dry and crumble into the cotton and you can't get it out Another problem arises if the dust is applied too soon In that case late bolls will not ma Harvesting of the South's cot ton crop was pinched in 1944 by acute labor shortages In west Texas new devices mostly home made were put into use In that area cotton is stripped from the stalk a quick method but one which lowers the grade This tvpe of mechanical harvesting is known as because the first such harvesters were nuMHited on large sleds One of the latest sledding ma chines is tractor mounted inser operating off a chain comb every thing off a cotton stalk and ele vate it into a hopper tUMMlT LYTELL dud hy orchetftix THE LISTENING LADY with DAVID ROS PREMNTEII BY
