ARIZONA REPUBLIC VALLEY SB 1070 draws protests at game By Daniel The Arizona Republic Opponents of Senate Bill 1070, Arizona's immigration law, marched to Chase Field Tuesday afternoon to picket outside Major League Baseball's All-Star Game. Salvador Reza, an organizer of the protest, said he expected 200 people to take part, but about 20 showed up, playing drums and chanting. Protesters held signs criticizing the law and urged people and players to boycott the game. Reza said the demonstration was intended to be peaceful. The aim of the controversial law is to' crack down on illegal immigrants in Arizona by requiring police to check the status of suspected illegal immigrants.

A federal judge put the law's most controversial parts on hold days before it went into effect a year ago. Shortly before game time, a group of between 15 and 20 supporters of SB 1070 arrived, waving American flags and signs that said, "We support Sheriff Joe." Diane Burnett of Scottsdale planned to attend the game and before entering Chase Field held up a sign that read, "Thank you for standing with Arizona." She said she wanted to thank Major League Baseball for "keeping the game here and keeping revenue in Arizona." Opponents of the law said the were disappointed that Major League Baseball players have turned silent on the issue. Tom Ribard, 52, of Glendale, who was going to the game, said people had a right to demonstrate, but he didn't think it stopped anyone from attending the All-Star Game. Parade crowd of children, and San Francisco Giants pitcher Continued from B1 Brian Wilson stood in the tion to the players in the parade. "Seeing the looks on the little kids' faces, that's my favorite part," she said.

The parade gave fans a peek into the personalities of the All-Star players. St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Lance Berkman threw hacky sacks into a SHARE Roberts Continued from B1 should be a part of her life here, at the end of it. If you knew Diana, then you know that she was instantly loved because she was so unfailingly, so naturally nice. Diana was that rare person whose life was centered not on herself but on other people, whether it was taking care of an ailing mother or a disabled sister or a columnist who on occasion hears once too often how rotten she is and always knew that her friend would laugh and tell her that, of course, it isn't so.

She was no less unusual when it came to journalism. Some reporters turn over rocks to expose what lies in dark places in the belief that everything, and especially communities, grow better in sunshine. Diana understood that sometimes the best journalism, the work that lives on, comes as a result of shining a light on those seemingly small things that contribute to the heartbeat of a community fledgling things that could so easily be left to wither and die. A community rose garden that shouldn't be sacrificed to development. A historic church in need of a hand.

A Fourth of July children's parade that each year brings people out of their houses and into their neighborhood. Diana wrote about such things because she cared deeply about them and about the people that she covered, and that is no small thing. It was caught early, Diana assured us, and we believed her when she said that everything would be OK. Diana, for all her softness, was a formidable opponent when she had to be, enduring all that this enemy threw at her with a force of optimism and resolve that battered her enemy even as it buoyed her friends. But this cancer, like Diana, was rare and fiercely aggressive, and by summer it had invaded her lungs and her heart and, at last, her brain. Five weeks ago, doctors sent her home to die. It is one of the mysteries of faith that something like this can happen to someone like Diana, that someone like her would not a miracle.

But having watched her these last few weeks, I've come to believe that maybe Diana and people WEDNESDAY, JULY 13, 2011 B3 like her are the miracle, put here to remind the rest of us that we are blowing it. That we can do better. That we can be better than we are. Diana experienced plenty of life's disappointments but you would never have known it. A few weeks ago, when words came more easily, Diana told me that she woke up every morning, determined to leave her mark on the world, simply by being kind.

"Love each other, that's the important thing, and just remember all the little things you do add a kind word, maybe a wave to somebody. Be a little bit different than the day before," she said. "Leave each day a little bit better." It will be said of my friend, Diana Balazs, that she fought until the end with hope in her heart, understanding that life, even a life flawed by physical affliction or personal tragedy, is precious. To the end, she was fighting for some small piece of that which many of us are so quick to give away as we wish that summer was over, that the weekend would get here, that we were somewhere else or someone else. Not until you sit at the side of a friend who is battling so hard just to hang on do you really understand, if only briefly, just how lucky we are and how much time we waste in the things that we do, and the things that we don't.

Leave each day a little bit better, my friend said. And she did. On Saturday evening, Diana's fight finally ended, just as the rain started to fall. Reach Roberts at laurie or 602-444-8635. LOSE WEIGHT with Hypnosis Written Guarantee That's right.
