The National Council represents 32 Protestant, Orthodox and Anglican churches, with a combined membership of nearly 49 million. SAMUEL FREILICH The rabbi who helped organize an escape of Jewish men during a forced march to Auschwitz in 1945 died last Thursday in New York. He was 91.

Rabbi Freilich established a network of schools for Jewish orphans in Hungary after World War II, and served the Ohave Sholom Synagogue in Gardner, from 1961 until he retired in 1978. During the war, he was drafted into a Jewish slave battalion by the Nazis and participated in a forced march of 60,000 prisoners, three-quarters of whom died. He wrote The Coldest Winter, published in 1988, about the march. EDWARD A. KASTELZ The World War II Army cinomatographer who filmed the liberation of the German concentration camp at Dachau during the war died Friday in Grandville, Mich.

He was 82. Mr. Kastelz served in the Army's 163rd Signal Photo Corps and was the first person to film the 1945 liberation of Dachau, where about 34,000 Jews died as part of the Nazi's systematic killing of 6 million of Europe's 9 million Jews. ANNE THOMPSON MacDONALD The founder and president of Recording for the Blind died Saturday in New York. She was 96.

The non-profit organization, based in Princeton, N.J., provides more than 80,000 books on tape for blind and learning-disabled students. It has 32 studios in 16 states. Ms. MacDonald started the recording service in 1946 and became its president in 1952. HARRY STEPHENS The nation's oldest living Marine Corps veteran died of pneumonia Saturday in Fort Myers, Fla.

He was 106. Mr. Stephens, a private first class, who attributed his longevity to eating grapefruit and honey every morning, led the Edison Festival of Light parade through downtown Fort Myers on his 104th birthday. HOUSTON Karl G. Henize, a senior NASA scientist and former astronaut, died Oct.

5 of respiratory failure while trying to ascend Mount Everest. He was 66. The scientist, who was on leave from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration! was buried at a Mount Everest base camp, in accordance with his wishes. Dr. Henize worked as an astronomer at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and as a professor at Northwestern University before being selected as a scientist-astronaut by Deaths YVAR MIKHASHOFF The pianist, composer and promoter of con-temporary and experimental music died Tuesday in Buffalo, N.Y., after a long illness.

He was 52. Mr. Mikhash-off had been an associate professor of music at the University of Buffalo since 1973. He was co-founder and director of the North American New Music Festival, held annually at the university. Mr.

Mikhashoff performed throughout the world and was ac- claimed for the Great American Piano Marathon, a seven-hour concert of 20th-century American piano music. NASA in 1967. He flew in space on the 1985 Spacelab 2 mission. ELSEWHERE ARIE R. BROUWER The former head of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the U.S.A.

died of cancer last Thursday at his home in Teaneck, N.J. He was 58.
