Or motor cars. The mailman's face was a picture really, as he handed over my clearly labelled Vampire Protection Outfit (whatever happened to plain brown wrappers?) complete with crosss, mirror, holy water and a variety of useful incantations. It's not that I'm not grateful. And I'm sure the bonus set of fangs will come in very handy. But I was going to say Fright Night vas fiin anyway.

Well, when I say fun that is your taste runs to spoofy comedy horror, in the Bp-smacking mode that- so delights the teenage hordes. Fright Night was at a distinct advantage, being previewed straight after a viewing of The Bride. As silly as it may be, it is never silfy enough to expect you to take it seriously. And the ratty good cheer with which it rips into the vampire legend came as a welcome change after the rather po-faced pretentions of The Bride. The joke in Fright Night is that nobody believes in vampires any more.

As Roddy McDowall, the low-rating host of a TV vampire-killer show laments, nobody gets it The Festival of Sydney 1966 in the neck any more. And he's right These days it's all cute co-eds being stalked by maniac killers in face masks. But vampires aren't averse to a cute co-ed either, as it turns out when Dracula decides to move on up a few centuries to make a personal appearance in the 80s. Transylvania goes to the suburbs in this updated vampire adventure and Dracula's the sexy next door neighbour, charming, laid back and a devil on die disco floor, though he blows his act a bit when his fangs get out of hand in the midst of his Saturday night fever. The plot well, when I say plot revolves around the efforts of the boy next door to convince everyone anyone that he is not a loony and the suave new neighbour is in fact a vampire.

He seeks the help of the old vampire-killer (McDowall) and that's the signal for the talented special effects team to let 'er rip. And very eye-catching it all is too, in its flesh-tearing red and bile green way. Hardly the fright of your life though, despite the bill LAUREN BACALL in TENNESSEE WILLIAMS' SweetBird OF)UTH Winner 3 API Awrdt Inc.
