Mr and Mrs Henrv Chdland J318 Avenue R. Galveston GIRL BORN TO: Mr. and Mrs. Charles Teller, Box 153 Alta lorna IF I HAD A MENTALLY retarded child, I would be much encouraged on reading recent articles in which the writers have told of their great success in using retarded young people in certain jobs that are simple and unexciting, but have to be done by someone. A mentally retarded person is happiest in a job which does not require a lot of thinking and planning and meeting of emergencies.

What he loves is a job that he has learned well and that then never changes from hour to hour or from day to day. Now I read in that splendid little journal "Performance; The Story of the Handicapped," published by President's Committee on the Employment of tbe Handicapped (Washington D.C. 20210) tbe story of a ranch in Goldthwaite, where Mr. Thurman Johnson and his assistants raise each year many thousands of turkeys and lambs. Today, the rancher employs 34 former residents of schools for the mentally retarded, and some people who have graduated from mental hospitals.

He has found these people to be good workers, and he is happy with them. To be sure, there have been some difficulties, but with the help of his foreman, Dan Tyson and his "Girl Friday," Mary McClung, these difficulties have been overcome. Last October, Mr. Johnson was named Outstanding Employer of the Year in the United States by the National Association for Retarded Children. As I said here recently, another great employer of the retarded and the handicapped is Henry Viscardi, of Abilities, Inc.

in Albertson on Long Island. It is always a great joy to me to hear of people like Mr. Johnson, who make an effort to employ people, people who are so handicapped that the ordinary employer does not care to hire them. AS THE EDITOR of Performance says, by giving 34 persons jobs, Mr. Johnson saves his state $75,000 a year in taxes, but that is only one good result of what he has done.

A much kinder act has been the giving of work, of an earned income, a reason for living, also self- respect, and joy to this group of human beings. Without work, their life would have been a hell of boredom. PUZZLING RECTAL PAIN People write to say that for some time, perhaps months or years, they have had a pain in or around the rectum, and no doctor can find what it is due to. Perhaps one doctor even operated to take off a little hemorrhoid (pile) or a little fissure, but that did not do any good. In some cases the pain was constant, and then I was almost certain that no local cause would ever be found for it, because the person said the pain was not brought on or made any worse by a bowel movement or the passage of gas.
