Out in the ozone I'm not making the argument that pop has replaced art. Art is always well ahead of pop in discovering issues, ironies, inconsistencies and dilemmas. Pop investigates those issues that are already fairly well-defined in newspapers and politics. Art is working out in the ozone, where things are not so well-understood. Krapp's Last Tape will never be a Nielsen favorite.

But those things that art is working on now will show up in sitcoms a dozen years down the line. And unlike great literature or great wine, pop culture doesn't keep. We have to drink it immediately. Ezra Pound once wrote that literature is "news that stays news." Pop instantly turns into yesterday's newspaper in the canary cage. But, we are all of us at every moment attempting to figure out what life is and how it works.

The answers our parents worked so hard to establish no longer function and we must discover our own. Our children must in turn discover their own. Pop culture for the most part merely validates the status quo from Ozzie and Harriet to Baywatch but what I call high pop recognizes the tender spots in the cultural psyche and is not afraid to look closer. Human beings always need some guidance, some illumination. In the absence of universally held religious or political beliefs, or a coherent mythology or the force of great literature, we latch onto the only universal thing left, pop culture, and make it do the service we require.
