The stadium remained empty until November 1990, when it became the home of the Sun City Rays baseball team. But the stadium closed a month later when the Senior Professional Baseball Association of Florida folded.

In 1991, three Valley men using the corporate name Field of Dreams leased the stadium from the RTC for use by the Men's Senior Baseball League, which is for players at least 30 years old. The partners were Craig Kimmell, Bill Dugan and Terry Van Gundy. Last year, Kimmell and Dugan Van Gundy had left the partnership joined forces with Charles Dorego, a New York real estate attorney to buy the stadium for $500,000 from the RTC. The partners will continue to operate the stadium until it is demolished this 90 DAYS SAME AS CASH O.A.C. The Sun City Stadium has been used sporadically in recent years by its many owners.

Del Webb. Corp. built the 12.5-acre stadium in 1971 to attract the Milwaukee Brewers for spring training, but in 1985, the Brewers were lured to Chandler. The same year, the Sun City Saints women's fast-pitch soft-ball team, which also used the stadium, folded. Webb sold the facility to Construction and Development of Glendale.

arranged a $2 million lease-purchase agreement in 1989 with three area residents who were involved in senior (nonprofessional) baseball. The three wanted to use the stadium for their games and as a playing field for their sons in Little League. But the partners' dream died about a year later and the stadium became the property of Southwest Savings, which then ffoor Water Canbs krystal kleer STADIUM square feet. "We're going to try yery hard to -'make this a jewel in Sun City because it's the first new project built there in a while," Dorego said. Plans call for two swimming pools and a recreation room.

A portion of the complex would be built on the ball field. Construction would start this winter and be completed in mid-1995. Dorego said apartment renters 'would be able to use the Recreation Centers of Sun City facilities. A small piece of the property has yet to be rezoned by the county from commercial to residential to accommodate the apartments. The stadium's fate was sealed in March with the opening of the Peoria Sports Complex six miles -away near 83rd Avenue and Greenway Road, Dorego said.

Peoria used $21.5 million in Maricopa County Stadium District money and $10.5 million in city money to build its stadium complex. Peoria Councilman David Pear-' son, who was heavily involved in the effort to bring major-league baseball to that city, said he was not surprised by the Sun City failure. "I believe that they understand now that their facility was sub- standard," Pearson said. "That's what other teams have been tell- ing us, that it needed an awful lot of work to bring it up to major league standards and that competition with Peoria's stadium was going to be very difficult." Pearson also said he doesn't believe there was room enough for another west-side-based team. I just don't think that the conditions are right now for another team on the west side," he said. The loss of the Sun City stadium is a blow to El Mirage. Leaders of that small community had hoped to annex the stadium property and apply to the county Stadium District for money to remodel the stadium.

21 mother had told it to her. To me, that's a nice piece of oral history." Hannes Kvaran, whose father was a marine engineer for the United Nations and moved his family about the world as his job required, added, "The roots thing has sort of meant a lot to me, because I didn't have any strong attachment to any other place." As for American Girl, he said, "I think the whole magazine has a unique take on history, which is an attempt to personalize it." Hannes and his family have lived in the Valley since 1976, the past seven years in Glendale. Brienne, who has a brother, Trevor, 13, loves reading and swimming, and shares her life with a large clan of stuffed animals. His father has assembled hundreds of pages detailing who begat whom, a trail of blood ties that can be traced back to sixth century France. With Brienne's project as the prompt, the stories poured forth.

The Kvarans learned some things they never knew, not only about the Icelandic forebears but about the women from whom Hannes' mother, who is American-born, descended. For instance, when Brienne's Kentucky-bred great-grandmother, Margaret, was 8 years old, her stepmother punished her for climbing trees by shearing her tresses until they resembled a boy's locks. Hannes Kvaran said, "We got that story from my mother, whose and Hannes Kvaran, a Glendale Community College economics instructor. While Pennie's background is German, Hannes represents the Icelandic side of the family tree. "Within the context of Icelandic history, which is limited, I have some fairly significant people," said Hannes Kvaran, who was born in Iceland and was named after his great-grandfather, Hannes Hafstein, Ragnheidur's husband and the first prime minister of an independent Iceland.

To satisfy the magazine editors' need for ancestral information, including photographs, Hannes Kvaran turned to his parents, now living in Colorado, who have passionately pursued the family genealogy over a lifetime.
