Perhaps you'll catch a glimpse of Soleri during a visit. He doesn't lead any tours but may answer questions if he's around, Koren said. Arcosanti is also a place that attracts people from all sorts of backgrounds, from survivalist types to those who mistakenly think they are joining a commune. Such a diverse group can lead to tension in the ranks at times, but residents diffuse it with activities such as projecting images of people cavorting onto a mesa wall opposite the community. "That's one way we desperately try to keep ourselves entertained here," Koren said.

ARCOSANTI from page 77 constructed would cool the city with air flowing upward from greenhouses. Current construction is focused on the east Crescent complex that wraps around an amphitheater. Apartments will rest atop retail businesses around the amphitheater when the project is completed. Even roofs are utilized for projects such as gardening. "There's no such thing as a roof at Arcosanti," Koren said.

A "sky theater" set up like concrete bleachers provides a space for people to lie on their backs and watch the stars or "just hang out," according to Koren. After a tour, wander through the visitor center, where an almost overwhelming number of bells is on display. From basic tiny models to elaborate bell sculptures, the things are everywhere. Molded coyotes, flowers, dolphins and leaves sit atop bells. Prices range from $14 to about $19,000 for the colossal models.

This city based on energy efficiency relies on the sale of bells to finance construction. Soleri decided to make bells using the area's silty soil. "It was a wild success," Koren said. Seventy-eight percent of Arcos-anti's budget is funded through the sale of bells. Visitors can watch workers pour bronze into molds to make the bells in the ceramic aspe.

"Every bell is an original," Koren said. Interested in setting up something similar to the bell business? In the midst of Boulder Station's casino is a dome-shaped pit area featuring 44 table games. The pit is highlighted by four, brilliantly-colored stained glass murals. Each 48-paned mural features a scene of a 19th century train, a scene that is rapidly becoming Station Casino's signature. Immediately outside of the blackjack pit are more than 2,000 slotvideo poker machines.

Boldly colored, multi-patterned carpet, reminiscent of the Victorian era, covers the entire casino area. Rich mahogany wood accents the Stepping into Boulder Station Hotel Casino is like taking a trip through time and finding yourself in the midst of all the grandeur of the 19th century'. The intricately detailed facility, which opened Aug. 23, creates an aura of excitement and elegance from the moment guests enter its doors. The $103 million facility is based on a continuous design, with all entertainment and dining offerings radiating from a central casino.

"Boulder Station's design creates an atmosphere of openness and easy mobility," said Blake Sartini, and sound equipment have been installed in the lounge to provide the highest quality programs. A short distance from the Railhead Saloon is Boulder Station's equally impressive race and sports book. The race book houses nine 70-inch television screens and nine 50-inch screens. The sports book boasts twelve 70-inch screens. A richly decorated 10-table poker room is also nearby.

A 300-room hotel is accessible from the walkway. In keeping with Victorian style, the hotel is as ornately decorated as the adjacent casino and entertainment area. Interspersed with the wood accents of the ceiling are Victorian Poppy ceiling tiles. Surrounding the casino area is a walkway made of hard wood. Above the walkway is a hand-painted ceiling featuring billowing clouds and blue skies.

The effect of both elements is that of a casual outdoor stroll. The walkway takes guests past Boulder Station's five full-service restaurants, all with facades and patios indicative of the time period. Also along the walkway is Railhead Saloon, Boulder Station's 270-seat lounge which features concert-level entertainment.
