Friday, August 26, 1994 The Arlona Republic 1)9 Stone is accomplice in glorifying crime MOVIE REVIEW "BRACE YOURSELF FOR A VISUAL ORGY! A delicious stew. of food and sex!" Edward Gulhmann, SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE "Two Thumbs Up!" Siskel Ebert EAT. 00 MAM W9MAN A comedy to arouso your appetite. OltMlliSaMUbnta) Itftant while staying sexy. How, for example, does a skinny, abused girl become a boxing champion overnight? Stone has no idea, so he just has Lewis punch out another redneck, then cuts back to the psychedelic slaughter.

There are several over-the-top performances particularly by Tommy Lee Jones, as a sleazy prison warden, and Rodney Dangcrfield, as a sleazy father that approach comedy because they are so ludicrous. Harrelson uses Natural Born Killers to put his Cheers image to rest by portraying Mickey as the rock star of mass murderers. Lewis plays an even sluttier nut than she has in other movies no easy trick. But this nightmare is strictly Stone's concoction. Whatever psychoses are explored here are his, and whatever harm is done to innocent people through the film is his also.

Natural Born Killers is rated for excessive gore, profanity and sex. It was edited down from its original NC-17 rating, although it's hard to imagine what was cut that was more objectionable than what was left in. STARTS TODAY Fxcllisivclv Af "A Must-See For The Little Rascals will steal your heart a fun summer comedy." -Jim Ferguson, FOX-TV dentist under a strobe light. The psychedelic intensity of the special-effects violence creates a vicarious sensation for the audience, helping them share the hallucinatory psychoses the characters are experiencing as they kill people for giggles. Perhaps some clever lawyers will be able to cite that psychological manipulation I when suing Stone and the studio for culpability in case the movie spawns imitators in real life.

Recent attempts by Warner Bros, to disassociate itself from the movie by labeling it satire is the film's biggest joke, an attempt to deny responsibility for any violence that may be caused by borderline moviegoers who become inspired by Stone's wretched excesses. The film has a ridiculous subplot, about the host (Robert Downey Jr.) of a TV crime show that makes heroes of Mickey and Mallory but that doesn't make the movie satire. It's Stone who makes heroes of these killers, by depicting them as invincible, always smarter than the stupid cops they kill and capable of winning every preposterous battle LITTLE BJQ LEAGUE (PG) LJ CITY SUCKERS II (PQ-13) LI SPEED (HI BABY'S DAY OUT (PG) "1 7 i LJ BEVERLY HILLS COP HI (R) MAVERICK (PG) LJ WYATT EARP (R FLINTSTONES (PG 1440 8. Stone's story follows Mickey (Woody Harrelson) and Mallory (Juliette Lewis), two young lovers who travel around the country slaughtering people at random. Stone gives these massacres an artsy look by mixing the action with oddly tilted shots, black-and-white inserts, bits of animation and flicker-cutting to an MTV beat. The first few times he uses these tricks, it's hot filmmaking. But the gimmicks are so overindulged that sitting through the film becomes a test of endurance, like getting drilled by a jpr iwuuii nan ajpr ANATURAL BORN KILLERS (R) Presented In Digital Stereo 2:00 (5:00) 7:55 10:30 ACOLOR Of NIGHT (R)' 1:30 (510 1020 BARCELONA (PG-13) 1:50 (5:30 7:35 10:10 Ml VIDA LOCA (R) 1 :40 5:20 7:30 10 00 THE MASK (PG-13) 1:20 3:35 5:50 8:15 10 25 TRUE UES(R)' 1:10 (450) 7:45 1035 ANATURAL BOflN KILLERS (R) 2:00 (S 00) 7:45 10:15 12:30 ACAMP NOWHERE IPG) 120 3:40 (5:55) 8:05 10:10 12:10 AWAGONS EAST (PG-13) 1:15 3 30 5:45) 8 10 10 20 1225 ACOLOR OF NIGHT (R) 4 1:50 (5:10) 7:40 10:05 12:30 IBLANMHANIKO-UI 7:30 PM 10:00 PM UTTLE RASCALS (PG) 1:05 3:10 (520) (12 00) THE MASK (PG-13) 1:10 3:20 (5:30) 8 00 12 20 IPSE JURASSIC PARK (PG-13) 1 1 05 1 :45 (5:15) AWAGONS EAST (PG-13) 10:40 1:00 3:15 (5:40) 8:10 1030 ABLANKMAN (PG-13) 8:00 PM 10:15 PM ACOLOR OF NIGHT (R) 10:45 125 (5fl0) 8:05 10 50 IN THE ARMY NOW IPG) 11 00 1:15 3 30 (5 45 8 15 10 25 LITTLE RASCALS (PG) 10:50 1:10 3 05 (5:15) 7:30 9:45 THE MASK (PG-13) 11:10 1:40 (5:10) 7:45 1010 THE CLIENTIPG-13) 11:15 2 00 5:20 820 1050 TRUE UES(R)' 10 30 1 30 (4 45 7 50 10 45 ANATURAL BORN KILLERS (R) Presented In Digital Stereo 1:45 5:10) 8:00 10:25 ACAMP NOWHERE (PG) 1:00 3:15 2:00 120 5:35 7:50 1000 5 30 8 10:35 5:15 7.55 10:30 5:00 7:45 10:20 CORRINA CORRINA IPG) ACOLOR OF NIGHT (R)' TRUE UESIR)' IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU (PG) LITTLE RASCALS (PG) 1:30 (5:20) 105 PM 305 PM 810 PM 10:15 PM ABLANKMAN (PG-13) ACAMP NOWHERE IPG) 1:20 3:25 1535) 7:55 10:00 COHHINA, CORRINA PG 2:00 5 05 7 45 10:20 UTTLE RASCALS IPG) 1:40 320 (520) JURASSIC PARK (PG-13) 1:50 (4:451 7:30 10:10 ABLANKMAN (PG-13) 7:35 PM 9:50 PM THfc LION KING 1.00 3:00 (6:15 7:20 9:40 IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU (PG) 1:10 315 (525) 805 1015 I'J jJc' 4 GENERAL CINEMA WESTRIDGE MAU 7SthAve. W.
