There are several over-the-top performances particularly by Tommy Lee Jones, as a sleazy prison warden, and Rodney Dangcrfield, as a sleazy father that approach comedy because they are so ludicrous. Harrelson uses Natural Born Killers to put his Cheers image to rest by portraying Mickey as the rock star of mass murderers. Lewis plays an even sluttier nut than she has in other movies no easy trick. But this nightmare is strictly Stone's concoction. Whatever psychoses are explored here are his, and whatever harm is done to innocent people through the film is his also.

Natural Born Killers is rated for excessive gore, profanity and sex. It was edited down from its original NC-17 rating, although it's hard to imagine what was cut that was more objectionable than what was left in. Recent attempts by Warner Bros, to disassociate itself from the movie by labeling it satire is the film's biggest joke, an attempt to deny responsibility for any violence that may be caused by borderline moviegoers who become inspired by Stone's wretched excesses. The film has a ridiculous subplot, about the host (Robert Downey Jr.) of a TV crime show that makes heroes of Mickey and Mallory but that doesn't make the movie satire.
