7:20 8:20 Friday, Sept 2 through By Bob Fenster The Arizona Republic Most films about lesbian love (Lianna, Desert Hearts, Persona Best) are really about straight women so offended by men that they turn to other women for romantic solace. Go Fish is different. It's a love story about committed lesbians, set among a circle of friends where all women are gay and proud of it. Unfortunately, the writing, directing and acting are so bad that Go Fish says far more about lesbian pride than it does about filmmaking pride. Max (Guinevere Turner) is a feisty young woman who is looking for a girlfriend.

Her friends try to fix her up with Ely (V.S. Brodie), an older, shyer woman who is only half-heartedly looking for a girlfriend. While the two women suffer from bouts of doubts about each other, their friends spend most of the movie discussing relationships, analyzing aspects of lesbian love and validating each other's, processes. While the tory itself is likely to appeal only to lesbians, director Rose. Troche, in her first feature, has a' major case of artistic pretension.

Troche can't let her camera alone. It jumps and skips from one odd-angled shot to another as if Troche were filming while trying to set a world record for espresso consumption. Brodie. Unrated. Dynamite 'k'k'k'k'k Very Good 'k'k'k'k Worth Seeing So-So Bomb to seasickness, don't sit too close. As if the motion weren't bad enough, Troche also isn't satisfied to shoot what the scene is about. When a scene contains two people talking, we see their ankles, their necks, their coffee cups, but rarely the people.

The writing is so strident about lesbian pride that it's like attending a political indoctrination lecture at feminist camp. However, the sound recording is so poor that maybe it's just the good lines that we can't hear. The actors are all amateurs, or should be. They come across not as natural but as untrained actors self-consciously trying to act naturally. There's nothing more stilted than that.

Go Fish is a movie by, for and about gay women. That's its single selling point. If the movie had been a love story about a man and a woman as if we needed more bad films about that subject it never would have achieved distribution. Unrated, Go Fish contains profanity, nudity and fuzzily filmed sex. 502-1880.
