CLEONE JONES the to goggBgggjsta Columbus Some folks think It Is Impossible for a child to remember events that happened when he was yean old but my third Christmas stands out clearly In my memory Perhaps the reason I remember this so well is that I received the two gifts I had longed for a bright red tricycle with rubber tires and a bell and a brand-new sled Thanks to dear old St Nick! On Christmas eve I was put to bed at my usual time 7 but I was so excited thxt 1 did not bq to sleeo until midnight After I finally did fall asleep I slept until noon the next day It has always been customary in our family to invite friends in on Christmas morning and present them with gifta as we open our own The family did not wish to distribute the gifts unless I was present so they had to wait until I awoke All our friends had been there since early morning and were beginning to think I would sleep all day when suddenly I hopped out of bed and bounded down the stairs Everyone was patiently waiting for me with no gifts unwrapped There stood a beautiful tall Christmas tree with ornaments lights and chocolate bells wrapped in tinfoil Even our black tabby cat Nigger seemed to join in the festivities by playfully pawing the chocolate bells and breaking the orna ments I consider this one of my merriest Chnstmasses although my mother thinks it was entirely too short as I spent half of it sleeping MARVIN COLBERT Bryant Junior High i It was Christmas eve We had just crawled Into our nice warm beds with our hearts full of joy for coming day It was hard to go sleep because we were thinking of the many toys we were to receive the next morning Our tree was decorated and it was a wonderful sight With all these thoughts in our heads we finally slipped into dreamland The next morning we awoke and dressed We did not rush in to see our presents but waited until all were reday as was our custom Then what a rush there wasl We all hoped to get just the presents we wanted and we did While we were looking at our gifts there was knock on the door Our friends had come to see what we had received We let them in to see our toys and then we joined them going around to see what our other friends had received This Christmas was like many others I have spent ell hanny days all One Christmas morning a few years ago as I entered the living room I ahifted mi eyes from one present to another but the one hid my hopes set on wai not in sight My heart sank and a lump came into my throat I had so wanted a bicycle I walked past the other gaily wrapped gifts not caring much what I received when something sparkly and blue shone from bemnd the davenport Yes it was my bicycle I believe this waa my most joyful Christmas GLORIA ANN ALLEN St Mary-of-tlie-Wasatch Hawthorne happymemories I When I was first told that I was JOSEPH HORNE not to spend Christmas at home but hjin Phoenix with relatives I was very much disappointed There would noti a Christmas tree or a family dim Riverside Christmas the happiest season of the year is here The very air la full of joyt We have been busy planning surprises for our friends and loved ones Now we should look Douglas Christmas time is here again It is nd- worit aU hfre would at those who are less fortunate than tfme of happiness and joy All the not be anF fnow Ior winter we and see that they are madeljchools prepare programs and parties 1 thouht myself very much abused 1 Nadine Mclnerny arranges a Bethlehem Crib in the first grade room of the Judge Memorial school These crib were extremely popular this yea- and were found In various forms in almost every school fr Emerson happy Christmas Is a time of love and sacrifice a time loved by all Have you ever stopped to think of a year without Christmas? It would be very barren and empty ALLAN THOMAS A ar A- and all the children are eagerto take part in the feativitlej The' school buildings are decorated the streets and stores are bright with lights and color Everything that can be done to make the holidays bright and happy is done by both the grown folks and the children No wonder we are all glad to see Christmas come each year The pupils of the Riverside school wish a merry Christmas and a happy New Yeark to everyone LORIN CHAPMAN -tifs I 1 4 1 McKinley but after considering the proposed trip I was surprised to find myself looking forward to going I had always wanted to go on a trip to visit new places I enjoy traveling on the train Furthermore since Christmas is a day for family reunions why should I not enjoy the prospect of spending the holidays with my aunt and uncle After all Christmas is celebrated everywhere in the world and it matters not where we are it is what we put into it that gives us joy and pleasure The Infant Jesus in the crib at Bethlehem instituted Christmas and taught us that the day can be spent on earth as it is in heaven PEGGY LETTIERL -F I Lafayette Why not share your Christmas this year just as Louisa May Alcotts shared theirs during the Civil war when their father was far away? Mrs March and her four daughters were carrying on as best they could in their weather-beaten shabby but mugh beloved home But Christmas was Christmas and was to start out with a marvelous breakfast marvelous that is for the March family Just as they were sittyig down lo eat the long anticipated meal someone came to the door and told them that just around the corner was a family without food Just a moment's hesitation a glance at their mother's face and each of the "little stilled her disappointment as best she could in trudging to the home where there was no Christmas at all carrying their fopd with them In the city that day there were no merrier girls than these lour hungry little women If people today would but g've to the less fortunate their hearts would be lighter and we would have an ideal Christmas VIRGINIA HAIR Gene Neslen Jack Stagg and Leila Mangum sing carols In front of the lovely "stained windows of the Hamilton school Oiled paper colored and arranged artistically almuiate the real stained glass windows Around Christmas time I begin to wonder how many people have the true Christmas spirit the spirit of giving Do we give so that we shall receive more presents do we give because we feel obligated to or do we give because we love the person we are giving to? Too often I am afraid it is one of the first two reasons Do we stop to think that many years ago Jesus Christ our Savior was born in a manger? This year let us try to make Christmas happmr by making someone else happy And let us not forget for a minute whose birthday we are celebrating RAY CHRISTENSEN The Christmas that stands out most clearly in my memory is the one when I was 7 years old My aunts uncles grandparents and cousins were there We children were anxiously waiting to be called into the living room where the tree had been secretly decorated This time came at last after half an hour of impatient waiting As we entered I saw mother motion grandfather away from his game of chess into the kitchen I wondered why mother would want grandfather at such a time as that but as she generally had good rea sons for anything she did I thought no more about it and joined the rest of the children in admiring the tree We were all clustered about the tree admiring it and wondering where our presents were when our attention was attracted by the jingling of bells at the front door My cousins and I turned to see the door slowly open and in walked Santa Claus He had his customary bag of toys and presents on his back After wishing us all a merrj Christmas Santa began calling out names and distributing his gifts We would walk up to hitnto receive our present and then return to our seats to admire it When we had all re ceived our gifts he again wished us a merry Christmas and departed Before this my belief in Santa was uncertain but that incident confirmed my belief and made it unwavering My only regret was that my mother bad called grandfather out of the room so that he could not enjoy the fun REX KYLE Garfield A big colonial house set back from the road Four huge white pillars across the front A big colonial door with a Christmas wreath hung from the knocker These were the first interesting things I saw when visited my aunt in Philadelphia An old negro mammy let us in and took our things I roamed all over the house and found many old and interesting articles old clocks and tables quaint bric-a-brac old high-backed chairs with red leather cushions charming dresses my aunts used to wear That night I slept In a big four-poster bed a room with huge colonial fireplace Next morning Mammy Ellen called me to tell me that everyone was up and waiting for me I dressed and went don to the library where all of the family were gathered We had all hung up our stockings the night before Even Mammy Ellen had hung her long black stocking where Santa would find it After our presents were unwrapped we sang Christmas carols to the music of an old pipe organ It was a lovely day and I shall always remember by Colonial Christmas BARBARA MARTIN On Christmas morning we can hardly wait for the alarm clock to waken mother and father At the first sound of it we all rush to the tree and start to open our presents During the morning we go to our houses to show them our gifts and to see what they received We go sleigh rid mg and then come home and get cleaned up for diiinsi And what a dinner it Is on Christmas dayl There is everything good to eat and we laugh and talk and enjoy the meal more than any other the whole year through After dinner we play with our presents until bed time It is always a happy happy day but solemn too for we always think Washington mother out of work I thought of thcso we stopped to investigate We old tojs my sister Mary and I hadjfound Santa Claus giving balloons had since we were 2 years old Theyiand candy away We all went over Jordan The spicy odors floating out from the kitchen the mysterious packages the secret conversations end the happy smiling faces tell me that something is coming soon What is it7 I can guess Christmas! Christmas Christian countries Is the happiest day of the year for chil-dre and grown folks too Young and old try to make others happy and by doing so are made very happy themselves On this day we experience the great joy of giving as well as receiving I am sure if we treated one another on other days the way we do on Christmas all would feel better all the time It seems strange when it makes us so happy that we do not have the Christmas spirit all the time TOM GARDINER were stored in the barn behind our house and almost forgotten I quickly went up to The Tribune and luckily was appointed Santas substitute for this very family My boy friends and I got some tools and paint and in a week and a half and received a gift from him My sister and I slept on the daven ette which was right next to the Christmas ree When I woke up about 12 o'clock I saw Santa Claus but I want back to sleep again In the morning we found lots of of the poor and unfortunate and hore that they too are happy and warm and comfortable HELEN DE NIKE West Junior Whittier When I wag a very tiny girl mo'h er asked me what I would like Santa Claus to bring me It seems as though I could never get enough peas so I said would like a whole can of peas to eat all alone On Christmas morning I found my doll rocking chair and dishes right before my eyes The family won dered why I ran to my stocking first When I brought the huge can out of my stocking they all laughed For many years I received my can of peas every Christmas but for the last two years Santa has forgotten them DOROTHY DAVIS tr the toys were ready In the mean- nice toys and plenty of candy nuts time Mary and some of her girl and oranges for all We had a very friends were busy making clothes happy Christmas that year for the dolls ELNORA RODGERS Christmas eve came at last to me dressed as Santa Claus and Mary as Mrs Santa In a wagon that Vra Stewart Fremont Christmas! This word usually means a holiday of gifts and parties and furl It would not seem like Christmas if there were not these things to make it joyful But with our merrymakmg we must not forget the real meaning of the day It is the day our Savior was born From Washington Irving we get this iittle verse So far everything had turned out just exactly as I had hoped and anticipated I did so hope my idea would be a sifccess! When mother had gone to the hospital two weeks ago tonight tonight was Christmas eve and I chuckled yet with a faint doubt of apprehension toward the coming dawn she had left no instructions as what to prepare for our Christmas And so only a few hours ago I had hit upon an inspiring idea Even to the jingling of bells the opening of the door and the leaving of a lighted candle the window my idea had been carried out and my small brother the sole benefactor knew nothing about it so I thought as I closed my drowsy eyes But early the next morning as I tiptoed into the living room a tousled head nearly covered with cotton -greeted me gurgling- "Ho ho me is Santa DOROTHY HUSBAND Jordan Last year was the happiest Christmas I ever had Our Junior Red Cross took Christmas presents to the inmates at the county hospital Some of those who were there to enjoy our gifts will never see another Christmas for death has called them fy Others had no friends or homes so we played Santa to them We took over big baskets of things and some of the presents they haa said they wanted We took nightcaps bed-jackets cigarets stockings and other things We learned that to give truly brings more happiness than to receive KATHRYN BROBERG Ensign looked like new was an immense l-bag brimming wuh tos We came1 Belonging to a small family may to the house and knocked on the(have lls advantages but at Christmas door The little il of 5 opened it time 1 am KIad that I have many "Oh she cried joyfully 'brothers and stem Santa Twau To me Christmas 13 a time of hap The look on that poor woman PlnCiS- toy and the spirit of giving face and the happine-s of the chil inot ony material things but gifts dren made that bv fa mv happiest love and friendship Christmas WALTER LOVE I lrl my home Christmas means the Christmas is a day of fun and joy because it is birthday People give presents to other people on Christmas On the night before Christmas boys and girls hang up their stockings In the morning they look in their stockings to see what Santa Claus has brought They know that they will not be disappointed I think Christmas is the best holiday of the whole year James Asher Rejoice our Savior he was born On Christ as day in the morning gathering together of a happy fam- The birth of the small Christ child is to me the loveliest story told A small child born a humble manger brought to this earth the wonderful Christmas spirit which is peace of mind and thought and the giving to one another both rich and poor This spirit is shown by the eagerness to help those less fortunate than ourselves Everywhere everywhere Christmas wonderful really when you thin kof it Everywhere on this big old earth of ours people are celebrating Christmas Hollanders put their wooden shoes on their freshly scrubbed doorstep confidently expecting Santa Klaus to fill them with sweetmeats In France too shoes are carefully shined and made ready for St Nicholas In England children exclaim over boar heads and plum puddings In Italy children empty the pockets of their clothes and nang them above the fireplace just as Americans hang up their biggest stocking for Santa Claus to fill I loe to thiYik of Christmas as a universal festival It makes the world seem smaller and its people very near to each other to think that everyone is celebrating the anniversary of birth with us BEVERLY RANK 5 ilv and the hir ng of Christmas hap-j ipme-s and jov When one member of the family Times square in New York Citv ejvcs- thnreis a place left empty Roogevelt Junior It was on this day that he was born lit a manger a very lowly and humble place The Wise Men saw the star in the East and came with gifts for the child Today the giving of gifts to children and loved ones is insignificant as compared with the greatest gift given to the world the birth of the Christ Child SHIRLEY EDWARDS 5 School Editors for the Eighth Year Write About Christmas sometimes railed the world busiest I th-it nn ono cic can fill corner is the most exciting place 1 Ms brother who has been away have ever been at Christmas me i for vrec yea-- at the Samoa islands I remember e'pncisIH a tew riavxj11 return next year and this willnt wre also add a richness to our before the Christmas of Man! of lhe happiest Christmases hearts that can be obtained only by In helping others we not only bring happiness to the hearts of those who would otherwise be sorrowful Sumner in? on Times square and Jookirg wp've ever had Broadway toward the g'eat Whitel BETTY BILLINGS Way With its brilliant lights as theiV street narrowed the distance it I asatcll giving generously and this richness can never be taken from us BARBARA BOYER STRAUB Judge Memorial resembled an enormous Christmas tree even larger than th beautifulh i One dav when I was Christmas decorated community tree wh ch 'hopping with my mother I spied a stood in Times square On our lei' Iminiature set of golf clubs I plead- Jefferson 1 Tis Christmas Eve!
