Born: 14.5.1914 Died: 17.8.1999 By BISHOP JAMES GRANT In an Anglican diocese the dean of a cathedral occupies a special place. Tom William Thomas, Dean of St Paul's Cathedral from 1962 to 1984, was a dean of deans. He was born in Brisbane on 14 May 1914, the eldest son of three children, and grew up in Woodend. The Reverend Dean Thomas was educated at the local state school and at Kyneton High School.

In 1937 he entered Ridley College and graduated with a Licentiate in Theology in 1939. He was ordained deacon in 1940 and a priest the following year. His first Obituary Janet Born: 9.12.1905 Died: 11.9.1999 Janet Adam Smith, who has died aged 93, was the author of the acclaimed biography John Buchan and an admired literary editor of the New Statesman during the 1950s. As a literary Scot who adored the mountains, Janet Adam Smith felt a great affinity with Buchan and she had no hesitation when asked to undertake the biography son Alastair (then Professor International Relations at Oxford, a chair later held by Janet Adam Smith's own son, Adam). She excelled at depicting the Perthshire area where Buchan grew up and in showing how places and experiences fed his imagination.

He was installed as 11th Dean of Melbourne in 1962, serving for a record 22 years. His arrival coincided with appeal for the restoration of the exterior stonework, a project that was successfully accomplished. Within the cathedral, Dean Thomas faced the challenge of integrating contemporary insights into its worship and fabric: a nave altar, rock masses, a female organist, modern liturgies. Through his preaching, his services for special interest groups and the Orders of St Michael, St George and St John of Jerusalem, the dean's involvement in the community at many levels city council, the Athenaeum and state libraries, the Alcohol and Drug Foundation and through his weekly column in The Sun, his influence was brought to bear on Melbourne.

Within the Diocese of Melbourne he was the archbishop's confidant and had the ear of synod. There and in the Council of the Diocese, his role as -breaker or Biographer and literary edited the anthology Poems of Tomorrow. One young poet she published, Michael Roberts, was a schoolmaster and shared her interest in mountains. When he began reviewing books for The Listener the two became friends and went climbing together in the Alps.

They married in 1935 and moved to Newcastle upon Tyne, where Roberts was by then teaching maths at the Royal Grammar School. Janet left The Listener and embarked on a short biography of Robert Louis Stevenson, published in 1937. Roberts died in December 1948 of leukaemia.
