Sunday, June 19, 1994 The Arizona Republic D9 Golf ils leads 9 eers dominate foreig 11 from page Dl I- U.S. OPEN WHERE: Oakmont Country Club near Pittsburgh, Pa. WHEN: Today. If there is a tie, an 18-hole playoff will be held Monday. TV SCHEDULE: Today: 10a.m.-3 p.m.,Ch.

3. DEFENDING CHAMPION: Lee Janzen. PURSE: $1.7 million with $320,000 going to the winner. Irwin would have been much better off if not for a double bogey on the last hole, where his driver slipped out of his hand and he "popped up" his drive, which led to a 71. "I played very in control until the last hole," said Irwin, 49, who might be America's best hope, considering he has won three Open titles.

Several other name players also are within striking distance, but they won't include Jack Nicklaus, whose bubble burst after a 77. Still in the hunt at 3 under was Curtis Strange. The two-time Open champ carded a 70. Another shot back was Greg Norman, who had a 69. And at 1 under was Fred Couples, who, despite a tender back, also shot 69.

But Els definitely is the man to beat. After his torrid start, he settled down to make three more birdies, while suffering two bogeys and a double. "Winning this tournament would mean everything to me," said Els, who was the runner-up in last week's Buick Classic. "It's a major, and everybody wants to win a major." It's certainly possible, concurred Irwin. "I agree with what Tom said about the young foreign players," he said.

"They are not overnight sensations; they're solid players." But then Irwin added a warning of his own. "But there's a lot of golf yet to play," he said with a sly wink. "And if this Open is like any of the rest of them, it might come down to who has been there before." ers. "I'm telling you right now, Ernie Els is a world-beater. As Yogi Berra always used to say, his future is ahead of him." But Els looked awfully good in the present during Saturday's hot and humid third round at Oakmont Country Club.

A blazing start Els made two birdies and an eagle on his first four holes sent him rocketing off to a 5-under 66. His front nine of 6-under 30 tied an Open record held by 1 5 other players. "The U.S. Open just seems to suit my game," said Els, 24, who tied for seventh in last year's Open, his first appearance. "I like to hit 1 -irons off the tee, and I'm a pretty good putter.

Yeah, I like my chances." For playing in his initial Open, Nobilo's bid doesn't look too bad, either. He shot a 68. "I know most Americans don't know much about me," said Nobilo, 34, who has three victories on the European Tour. "But I feel I've got a solid game and a definite chance (in today's final round)." Montgomerie, the second-round leader, also has a shot at becoming the first foreigner to capture the Open since David Graham in 1981 at Merion in Ardmore, Pa. But he'll have to play better than the roller-coaster 73 he put up Saturday.

That round included an eagle, two birdies and six bogeys. Then come the Americans Watson, Irwin and Loren Roberts, all tied with Montgomerie at 4 under. Of those three, Roberts is the hSttest after shooting a brilliant 64. That was 1 shot shy of Johnny Miller's Open record, set here when he won the 1973 Open. A journeyman, the 38-year-old Roberts doesn't have the experience of Watson or Irwin, but he looked on top of his game as he made seven birdies and seven saves, while needing only 24 putts.

Watson also had it going at times, as his 68 included four birdies and an eagle to offset three bogeys. "Remember, this is the Open," said Watson, 44, whose eagle came from 40 feet at No. 4, just after he'd made a 45-foot putt to save par at No. 3. "I still think anybody within 7 (shots) has a chance." Colin Montgomerie of Scotland runs out of the rough to see where his shot landed on the first fairway.

Montgomerie finished the third round of the U.S Open tied for third, 3 shots behind leader Ernie Els. "But give Loren credit. He put up a number, even though he had to fight for it." Memories Phoenix architect Jack Snyder returned to Oakmont this week, a course where he was superintendent from 1950-52.

"There are a lot of memories here for me," said Snyder, whose courses in the Valley include the original Phoenician, the east nine at the Boulders, the Indian' Bend course at Camelback and two municipal courses Cave Creek and Ken McDonald. "I planted the first trees here, rebuilt the No. 8 green when the Philadelphia turnpike came through in 1951, and watched Sam Snead beat Walter Burkemo in match play to win the '51 PGA Championship. "My family roots are here. I grew up in Rosedale, which is south of Oakmont.

My dad, Arthur, started caddying at Oakmont in 1907, and was the golf coach at the University of Pittsburgh." Snyder is amazing. He's 76, underwent a heart bypass and still plays the game well. So does his dad, who is 96 and living in Tucson. Bustin' loose The first two rounds of the Open averaged 5 hours and 13 minutes per threesome, with a high of 5 hours and 48 minutes. The slow play had some players tearing their hair out.

But Mark Carnevale found himself the odd man out as the format went to twosomes and had the choice of playing by himself or with a marker. He opted to play solo, and breezed through his round in 2:28. "It was a little more difficult playing by myself," said Carnevale, who shot 76 and was 10 over. "But at least I didn't have to stand around in the sun as much." Speaking frankly Frank Hannigan was in the minority when he wrote in the June issue of Golf Digest that Arnold Palmer should not have been given a special exemption to play in the Open at Oakmont, Palmer's home course. The former executive director of the U.S.

Golf Association didn't back down from his unpopular viewpoint, even though Palmer became a huge story Friday when he bid an emotional farewell to the Open after missing the cut badly. "No, I still feel the same way," Hannigan told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "It's not show business." Thank goodness Reg Murphy is running the USGA these days. OAKMONT, Pa. As most of us who play the game already know, golf, more than any other sport, is a game of inches.

Or, as they say on the pro tours, "Drive for show, putt for dough." That principle never was more obvious than Saturday, when Loren Roberts and Phil Mickelson were paired in the third round of the 94th U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club. Mickelson clearly outplayed Roberts from tee to green, but Mickelson struggled his way to a 2-over 73 while Roberts posted a sensational 64, 1 shot shy of Johnny Miller's record score in the 1973 Open held here. "I got it up and down from everywhere, and made a mile of putts," said Roberts, who saved par seven times while needing only 24 putts during a bogey-free round that left him 4 under. "Phil hit it much better than I did, especially on the back nine.

But, hey, it was my day." At the par-5 No. 4, Roberts hit three straight shots in the rough, then chipped to 10 feet of the hole and made his putt to save par. Mickelson, meanwhile, was 5 feet past the cup on his third shot, staring at a sure birdie. But his putt burned the edge. At the par-3 13th, Roberts saved par out of the bunker, while Mickelson hit a beautiful shot to within 10 feet of the cup and again sent his birdie attempt over the lip.

"The best example came at (the par-3) No. 16, where Phil hits it stiff, about 3 feet behind the pin," Roberts said. "I hit a poor tee shot to the fringe, but roll in an 80-footer (for birdie), while Phil lips out "It's funny, because Phil has the reputation as the great putter, not me. Mickelson, who is 5 over and out of contention, acknowledged, "I don't feel very good over the putter right Al BehrmanThe Associated Press Loren Roberts pumps his fist after shooting a tournament-low 64 Saturday, only 1 shot off Johnny Miller's 1 973 U.S. Open record for one round.

Redman missed a 7-foot putt on the 18th hole that would have given her a clear lead.

He shot a 5-under 31 on the front nine, then had two bogeys on the back in what he called "the tale of two nines" to finish at 13-under 131, 1 -stroke better than Lee Trevino. "I just didn't make the putts," Stockton said of his 3-under 69.

"It's not fun to sit there and not have them go in. I don't know why they didn't." Stockton was disappointed he didn't give himself a bigger cushion, but said he hoped he got the struggling out of his system. Trevino started the day 5 strokes back after Stockton set a course record Friday with a 62. Trevino shot 65 to finish at 132 for two rounds. Jim Albus (68) and Jim Dent (71), a stroke back after Friday, finished at 134.

The Associated Press ROCHESTER, N.Y. Betsy King dropped back Saturday into a four-way tie for the lead of the LPGA Rochester international, as Patty Sheehan, Kristi Albers and Michele Redman threatened to get between her and the Hall of Fame. With mixed fortune on the greens and a few erratic drives, King struggled through a par-72 third round to remain at 10 under. Sheehan, a three-time winner at the Locust Hill Country Club since 1989, surged into contention again with a 5-under 67, the best round of the day. "I had some chances and just didn't make anything," said King, who is one victory short of the 30th tournament victory that would gain her automatic entry into the LPGA Hall of Fame.

"I had a hard time. I'm still not hitting that many fairways." Barb Bunkowsky (68), Dawn Coe-Jones of Canada (71) and Lisa Kiggens (71) were 1 behind at 9 under and Nancy Ramsbottom (69) and Dottie Mochrie (69) were 8 under. King had three bogeys and three birdies on the front. She rrjissed par putts of 5 and 7 feet on Nos. 5 and 6, then made 15-foot putts for birdie on Nos.

8 and 9. Sheehan, meanwhile, dropped a 40-foot putt for birdie on No. 1 and a 30-foot putt for birdie at No. 11.
