Earlier Graf had reminded reporters that she had played her first professional match against Austin at a tournament in Fildefr stadt, Germany, in 1982 Austin, the four-time defending; champion, beat Graf 6-4, made a rather innocenf comment the German never forgot. "She said there were hundreds of players like me in Ameri' ca." Graf paused, then "Probably not any more." Austin, who began her second comeback here last year and is now ranked 86th in the world, remembered praising Graf at the time. "I think she took what I said out of context," Austin said. "I'd just played a 13-year-old kid who 5'd never seen before, and the German press asked me how gooct I thought she would be. I don't have a crystal ball.

If I did I'd be at the racetrack." Anglers who fish Port Phillip Bay consistently report that this summer, for some unknown reason, there has been a tremendous influx of juvenile snapper. No one can offer a satisfactory explanation as to what has brought it about. The snapper are not confined to any particular area and are spread out all over the bay, eagerly attacking the baits, but anglers are obliged to return these small pinkies" to the water. As well, there are also garfish about by the million. The appearance of both these species is intriguing, when argument is raging about the reasons why so many fishermen are describing it as the worst snapper and whiting season in 40 years.

There can be no doubt that this season, Port Phillip snapper fishing between October and January normally the peak period has been little short of disastrous, but nobody has been able to offer a satisfactory explanation. There are many reasons advanced, of course, from amateurs and professionals alike, since both groups have seen their catches drastically reduced. For example, one responsible club official reported that on one occasion, a professional in the AJtona area put out two long lines with 100 baited GEOFF BROOKE hooks on each and caught only one snapper. In both official and amateur circles, a great deal of emphasis has been placed on the pollution factor. Heated arguments have been raging as to its effect on the adult whiting and snapper, both bottom dwellers that breed at sea and drop millions of eggs in a series of batches.

One large group of anglers subscribes to the frequently quoted theory that pollution of the water during the spring of last year was the reason why the big schools of large snapper failed to arrive. Another group maintains that the heavy rains and the cold winter of '1993 resulted in the temperature of the bay water being considerably lower than usual in August and September. They claim that this meant that water pouring out through the Heads, which normally attracts the snapper and whiting because it is warmer than the open sea, was, in fact, colder last spring and the fish did not enter the bay. Then there are some who put it down to a low degree of salinity; and others who steadfastly stick to their Surf beeches: Ports! Qunriematta (1 00); Ocean Grove (0 OS); Urn (-0 35); Apoao Bey (-0 38); PMWp Msnd (0.10); Waratsh Bay KScunds (0.10). assertions that it is all due to the scallop fishing. It is clear that no one knows exactly what caused the shortage of snapper and whiting. Several very experienced amateurs have a big question of their own. They want to know why millions of small snapper and hordes of big garfish are coming in, if the water is as polluted as we are told. A very interesting point, and no one seems to be able to answer it either.

like his chances for the forthcoming French Open which he needs to win to keep his Grand Slam hopes alive. He rates him as no more than a 201 chance. And he disputes the perception that the world No. 1 Is colorless. "Color comes from winning.

The public want to see the best I hope the public come to like Sir Galahad. You dont have to raise hell to be colorful. "Sampras has Just got to watch that he doesnt over-play and over-travel. Some of these guys seem to think they're going to quit printing money." In 1 953 one reporter wrote of Kramer: "He punches the ball with the controlled fury of a Dempsey and the precision of an expert cashier." Another In 1946, prior to a US-Australla Davis Cup tie In Melbourne wrote: "Kramer bases his game on sustained pressure. His attack begins from his service or the first shot he plays when receiving.

"He does this much In the manner of the great Donald Budge, and with his long arms and legs he creates some of the Impression of a spider preparing to pounce on a fly Nothing he has seen since his playing days has made him believe there Is a better way to win than attacking, especially if following a big serve. It all about forcing an opponent Into mistakes, he says. "And if you keep coming In, hea got to keep coming up with passing shots, and as the match goes on the goddamn sidelines start shrinking." He attributes Australia decline as a power in world tennis to the Inexorable move away from the traditional grass courts. But he rejects the suggestion that modern tennis favors power players. "You've got the power guys: Sampras, Stlch, Ivanisevic, Becker and the back-court guys: Courier, Chang, Bruguera, a bit You've got a balance." By ALAN ATTWOOD The champ move a little slowly these days.

He is 72, has a bad back, a bad hip, and hasnt swung a racquet on court for years. But when the talk turns to tennis he seems as quick on his feet as in his playing days, when he was described as having "the swiftness and grim purpose-fulness of the lack Kramer was US Open champion in 1946 and '47, the same year he also won Wimbledon. But his place In modern tennis has more to do with what he did for tennis than his achievements as a player, though these were considerable (In 1939, aged 18, he became the youngest man to have played In the Davis Cup). Kramer Is regarded as the father of professional tennis. Even before the advent of TV he developed the concept of a tennis circuit, in which the best players travelled from city to city playing before a paying audience.

What he never anticipated was the extent to which the game, and the money around it, would grow. When he turned pro In 1947, his salary of was the highest paid to a player. These days the big guns can earn many, many times that amount In a single tournament. And Kramer doesnt begrudge them any of Its "I'm not disturbed by the money at all. Because It only goes to those with the talent, or the ones that are marketable.

"Look at Agassi. Its fascinating that heb not nearly as good as he should be as a player, but heb different so he an attraction. I can't believe sponsors still want to pay him the money they do as his ranking slides, but thars their business. To a tournament hefe still worth a lot of money. He sells tickets.

And Its all about supply and demand." Kramer was in Melbourne yesterday to be guest speaker at a sports star dinner last night. In fact, thereto five to 10 of the old guys I'd love to back against Pete. Hes not as tough as the others. Sedgman would have chewed Pete up." Frank Sedgman, he adds, was the toughest guy he ever played. Then again, Rosewall wasnt bad either.
