The ALGONA UPPER DES MOINES Second Section Tuesday, June 25,1946 40 Farms Hit By Tornado; Hundreds of Trees A Loss Swea City; The barns and out- 'buildings that Went down in. Sundays tornado June 16, in Grant, Harrison and Ledyard .townships can foe rebuilt when materials 'become available, but the hundreds of shade trees that wafe irreparably -damaged won't be ..replaced during the owners' lifetime. Hardly An orchard on the. 40 farms visited by the storm escaped damage or total destruction of from'26% to 75% of its trees. •• '. =v Cedars 20 feet tdll and a foot in diameter at thq base snapped off like'toothpicks; at the Oscar Nelson farm a cottonwood over four feet in. diameter was uprooted, pulling a large steel culvert with it. ; At the same farm, the wind rolled the threshing machine over twice. Six cattle died in the .wreckage of the barn. On the Patterson sheep ranch, formerly known as the Chubb pasture, six .miles straight north of Swea City, a cupola of a destroyed barn lies at the southeast corner of the field, dropped, at least ;a mile from' the ; place Where it started. , ' The fine evergreen: windbreak on the old Jim Vaux f arm across from the Patterson: ranch is half destroyed. The house, at the A. F. McFarland home half a mile farther north had portions of the roof knocked off when the barn whirled to pieces and struck the roof. The steel windmill tower appears to have been wrung by ; a giant hand. , At the Grant Center church, three-fourths of a mile west of the Grant Consolidated school, the bell and the <. belfry were torn off and. thrown - into the yard. One'oddity remarked upon . by those who viewed Ihe storm's path was; the fact that the buildings on the Patterson sheep ranch, which •re situated at the, top of Chubb's hill, highest point of land in the county and one of the highest in the state, are comparatively little damaged, while the Win. Barger place directly, across the road had its grove and ornamental evergreens badly damaged, though the building site is in a low. protected spot. ' The, good, neighboc-ippJicy-.'was irfg^exempliflea**rSHday • 'and Tuesday as well-nigh all of Grant township turned, out to help cldan up .the wreckag?. Trucks and tractors were being' use'd to pull away flattened walls; broken timbers and other debris was being piled into wagons and (picked up from the fields where it had been carried by the wind, and telephone and electric linemen were working at top-speed to repair broken lines and poles. In some spots hardly a telephone pole in a\ mile can be found intact. -"Monday "the water left- standing' in the fields after the downpour resembled pon,ds WEDNESDAY ONLY! At Our Fountain and streams. Drainage ditches ran bank-full. Corn and soy beans were ..flattened into the ground or washed out completely. Many cars' of sightseers traveled up. and down over the three townships Monday viewing the damage'done by the storm.
