"At least, I was able to help the young generation learn what happened so that it will never be repeated," Henson was quoted as saying shortly before she died last month of a heart attack. In 1996, Henson, along with six other Filipinas, received an $18,500 compensation from a private Japanese welfare fund and a letter of apology from the Japanese Prime Minister, Ryutaro Hashimoto. Forty-six, including Henson, have a pending lawsuit before a Tokyo court for legal compensation from the Japanese Government.

Henson said she was only 14 when three Japanese soldiers raped her near her Manila home in 1942. She was later taken to a garrison where soldiers, sometimes as many as 12 at a time, would take turns raping her day and night, she said. Guerrillas rescued her after nine months. The Hooghly pilot, splendidly caparisoned in a uniform keeping up the image of the Raj in India, I can understand, but can your readers throw any light on the 'nines' and the 'pox doctor's clerk'?" The Roman Empire lumbered on for 300 years past its use-by date because of the morally enervating effects of the Coliseum. We can't expect to overthrow the MCG in a generation.

But the frabjous day will surely come when the MCG will be a forlorn, broken-down, weed-infested, cat-pee stinking, graffiti-etched ruin just like its precursor. Her marriage to a New South Wales judge, Mr W. H. Robson, ended in divorce in 1975. She and Sir John were married at Scots Kirk, Mosman, soon afterwards.

In the aftermath of the dismissal of the Whitlam Government, Sir John praised the "courageous support" of his wife, who refused to absent herself from what he termed "risky" official engagements. "She was always there, cool, serene, dignified," he wrote. Lady Kerr is survived by a son and daughter from her first marriage and four grandchildren. Sir John died of a brain tumor in 1991, aged 76. Lady Kerr's funeral service will be held today at St James Anglican Church, Sydney.

James Cunningham T.tnmrviewed many years later, Lady Kerr attempted to dispel what she might have termed another myth. "John and Gough Whitlam were not friends as such," she said.
